It is the year 1501. A wealthy feudal lord hires a mercenary army to recapture his castle after a coup has deposed him. Lord Arnolfini promises the rugged mercenaries they can keep the loot, only to double-cross them after the battle by firing on them with a cannon and seizing the spoils. The coldhearted mercenaries will get their revenge and then some when a rich caravan including Arnolfinis soon to be daughter in law falls within their grasp. Next, the mercenaries capture an entire castle weakened by the plague, but an epic battle ensues when the captive womans fiancée and his army catch up to them. This flick was directed by Paul Verhoeven. And like one of his other films, Robocop it is quite gory and bloody. The great Rutger Hauer plays Martin the Mercenaries impromptu leader. This movie had the feel of an old fashioned medieval film of the mid 20th century, but with the violence and sexual content of an 80s horror film. I liked that blend and dug the movie. A bit historical inaccurate, looks to be more like the 1100-1300 IMO. 4/5
