I don't really get the big deal with this one, I think it's incredibly overrated. I say bring it on, I've got more room on my not-seen-at-theaters-but-on-DVD list.

Yeah, I heard about this, and I can't even be mad about news like this anymore, its no surprise. I love the original, and I have little doubt that the remake will miss the mark completely. Of all the horror films I can think of, this makes the top list of those that need a remake the least (leaving out those that have already been remade). Even the special effects are still incredible.
But again, not unexpected.

The transformation scenes in the original were spectacular. The film itself was only alright IMHO. I don't see the need for a remake, but I don't see this one as quite the affront to my sensibilities that TCM, Last HOuse on the Left, Hills HAve Eyes, and Halloween were. Not to mention the abomination that NOES promises to be

The transformation scene is actually the one area I don't think deserves any credit at all. The Howling did it so much better, the end result is much, much, much better and it looks more realistic there than it does here.

I agree GL that the transormation is overrated. I don't think it looked that great but I liked the look of the wolf overall and the crazy look of the stuff in the dream sequences.
Oh yeah, and the look of his dead friend rotting!

I think that tthe transformation scene was great because of how painful it looked. It was one of the first times I can think of where a film actually dealt with the idea that changing form that way would probably be excruciating and frightening. Prior to this film, it was all done offscreen the way that The Wolfman did it.
I also prefer The Hosling to this film, but definitely not for the transformation effects. In fact, I think the Howling makeup makes people look more like apes than wolves.

I agree completely, I was going to say the same thing. The transformation scene here is close to how I would imagine it would really be. I think its an outstanding scene. Oh and the dream sequence scared the hell out of me. It still creeps me out. Personally, I far prefer An American Werewolf in London to The Howling. I do like The Howling, but it has never been a favorite of mine like this one is (which just had a better balance of scares and humor in my opinion, which is what I prefer).

I somewhat mispoke. The transformation scene is very good. The acting and writing behind it were superb and the pain was a good idea. I just usually hear it praised for the effects mostly. And I felt the effects, while not bad, are not great and are overrated.

To me, it's more like a genetically-engineered dog than anything else, whereas The Howling has a much more realistic-looking and believable werewolf. The key difference is that they actually look like werewolves rather than dogs.

I think a remake is unnecessary. AWIL its all the right notes. Af ew quibbles here and there, but a remake can only offer state-of-the art EFX. Which, would most likely be complete CGI rendered animation. Bleech.
