Another one that comes to mind as at least the equal of the book is Kubrick's adaption of Anthony Burgess' A Clockwork Orange. Come to think of it he did a damn fine job with Clarke's 2001 and KIng's The Shining as well...

Was going to respond to this, then realized my opinions about A Clockwork Orange and The Shining are already in the thread......I had forgotten about this thread.....

We should also remember in terms of fine movie versions of books - and while many of us are salivating over the special edition of Deliverance - that that film was adapted from a novel by James Dickey.

The Keep. Whilst the film was butchered by the studio and a great deal of plot and character excised it still manages to create something much more unique and stylish from the original premise. I've just about given up all hope of a restored DVD release. Sob.

I have yet to see Deliverance either, and didn't even realize it was a novel.

I don't have a particulate book or movie in mind But I do have a general opinion !! When you read a book its open for your interpretation your imagination creates every thing about what you read the writer just lays the ground work for your mind to build on . But in a movie the view you are suck with is what the director wants you to see so you may just go and leave you imagination at home !! Example: Have you ever read a book and then gone to see the movie and felt that it was the same thing but you had a very different image in you head

Regularly. With very rare exceptions - the Lord of the Rings Trilogy being pretty close (shame about omitting Tom Bombadil though).
One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest would be a case in point for me - had imagined it totally differently to what I ended up seeing on screen - but in a way that was actually quite refreshing, because it gave me another interpretation. The same with Heller's Catch 22.
