Good question, Ginger. My guess would be that it isn't a sequel at all. Instead, perhaps JAcson realized that the Hobbit was more of a children's book than the trilogy was and wants to split it into two movies so the kiddies can handle the running time. Just a thought there, except tthat I remember the Hobbitt being relatively short, so I really don't know whats up

I was thinking/hopeing that its going to be its own movie that takes place inbetween The Hobbit and Fellowship of the Ring. ;D HNT may be right, but the other movies are so long that I don't think the run time will matter.

Been thinking about this a bit and Conan may be on to something. I feel the Hobbit can easily translate to a two hour movie. A sequel could then take a look at interim events that are hinted at in Fellowship. Now it's a long time since I've read the books but didn't Gandalf expel 'The Necromancer' (Sauron's form before he returned to Dol Guldur) from Southern Mirkwood during that time? It would also provide an excuse to have a scene in the Old Forest and introduce Tom Bombadil and Barrow Wights.

PErhaps. I just pray that Peter JAckso realizes that nobody wants to hear the hobbits sing a damn song. My recollection of reading The Hobbit as a kid is that every few pages was a lame song and dance number to skip over, lol

Good point. Old Tom was sorely missed by me in Fellowship - I think this would be a very uneccesarily drrawn out procedure just to spin the material from the book into two instalments

Taken from Deadites Online Raimi Going to Hell and Bag End - 12.20.07 According to Variety Sam Raimi is returning to his genre roots to direct "Drag Me to Hell", a supernatural thriller, written with his brother Ivan under Ghost House Pictures. Afterwards he will take on the Hobbit films for New Line and MGM since Peter Jackson said he won't be returning to direct.

Not sure how I feel about Raimi doing this. Since he became obsessed with CGI his films have left me cold. This needs a story teller. Hopefully 'A Simple Plan' Raimi will turn up.

Do you think he will have Bruce Campbell do a cameo?

as a big fan of lord of the rings when i heard rumours that the hobbit was going to be made i was very excited.
from what i can gather peter jackson is committed to other projects but has signed on as executive producer . uh oh i thought, who will be able to do the hobbit the justice it deserves ,as jackson had exceeded my expectations with the lotr trilogy. guillermo del torro has taken on the job and i feel quite confident that he will do it justice. i have enjoyed immensely some of his previouss works such as cronos , mimic ,blade 2 , hellboy and pans layrinth. filming is supposed to start next year with the release of the first part in 2010 based on the actual novel. the sequal , is set to be released the following year , but as many of you know , the sequal to the hobbit is the lord of the rings , but the hobbit 2 will infact be a new story....
The sequel has been alleged to be an original, untold story, not directly adapted from any of Tolkien's novels: The plans call for Guillermo del Torro to work back-to-back on "The Hobbit" and its sequel, which will deal with the 60-year period between that story and "The Fellowship of the Ring," the studios said.
smaug will have to be the greatest dragon ever otherwise it won't work, but i'm looking forward to it , how about you?

I personally think that Guillermo del Toro is the perfect choice here, if Jackson can't do it. He is quickly becoming one of my favorite directors. I'm almost positive he will do a wonderful job. Though I am not sure how I feel about the second movie yet. But my only question is, will this mean that he is no longer doing At the Mountains of Madness? Because I was really looking forward to that one, and if that movie is going to be shelved so he can make this movie, well that's a bit disappointing to me.

i am looking forward to "at the mountains of madness" and from what i have read even if it is shelved for the time being it will definately be made. some quotes from del toro himself....
Del Toro: If you [go] deep enough you will find people that hate any depiction of Tolkien. They dislike any Tolkien that is not Tolkien. The people that are going to like it are going to like it because I come from a genuine place. And the people that are going to dislike it are going to dislike it because I'm coming from a genuine place. There's no two ways about it. You have to follow your instincts. My message is simple: If you don't think [Peter] did a fabulous job, very likely you won't think I will. If you think he did, I will do my best to make you proud of me.
i read that del toro has finished his script for at the mountains of madness and is hoping to get it done before starting the hobbit.yay!
