Thats what I did, I went in thinking it was not going to be as good as the worst of the others, and came out likeing it alot. Some of the characters I hated, and was soooo happy to see them die. ! that's what I did, I knew it would never scale the heights of say the original or Jason Lives, but it gave me what I wanted.and yes it features probably the most annoying character in the history of the series.

actually, looking back, I think what spoiled it for me was the beginning and that whole ridiculous sub-plot about getting pot or something.
and, the characters, many of them, were so god damn annoying.

I'm so used to teens or college students doing really stupid things in slasher films that it apparently doesn't even phase me anymore (after a group of kids actually had a party....outdoors......and got falling down drunk....to apparently celebrate the fact that there was a masked killer on the loose killing their friends in Freddy Vs. Jason, nothing even surprises me....haha...). So the beginning didn't bug me too much. Really, it kicked into action so fast that I didn't even really focus on it much. The pacing of the film, and the fact that it didn't play around with the "formula" too much is what makes it fun. The characters, and their motivations, are mostly throw away. And annoying characters are a staple in this series. I can't think of ONE Friday the 13th movie where I didn't find the majority of the characters annoying, at least to some degree (the heroine of the first one drove me CRAZY at the end). The saving grace for me is there is usually one person I am rooting for. And like I mentioned before, I had that here as well. All of the movies are chock full of eye rolling moments for me...LOL. And the scene in the bathroom was VERY well done I thought. I absolutely loved that scene. Really the best thing about the movie. There were some close ups of Jason's face, and the mask, that were very effective, I thought. And like Conan, I quite liked the tunnels. But I can see why some wouldn't be crazy about it. Its not anything new really.

I'm not a true fan of the Friday franchise-save for the original (perhaps its because I first saw it when I was a teen shortly after its theatrical run on Showtime). However, I purchased the DVD on a whim at Best Buy and well, except for the first 20 mins of the film, it was a rather pedestrian, lackluster execution-no pun intended!

Tbh, i really hated this movie. It seemed to me that Jason was completly out of character during the entire film. He seemed to be much more intellegent and he no longer appears to be a brainless killing machine, he now seems to enjoy killing his victims and even prolongs the process of murder. That's much more of a Freddie thing to do imo.
Don't hate me lol

I just watched it for the first time this weekend, and I had a blast. It is certainly not original, or even good by any legitimate measure, but no Friday film ever was. THis one delivered dead teenagers and a menacing killer quite effectively, and the kills were probably the highest quality since the days of Savini. THis one kinda made up for all of the edits that the old ones needed to maintain that R rating back in the 80's. This one was a no holds barred gore fest and I dug the hell out of it.
Sure the kids were dumb. SUre most of them were annoying. But if any of the kids in these movies behaved like remotely reasonable people, the killer would get one or two victims before the rest of the kids took off home and called the cops from the highway, thus ending the film.
In other words, when you see a film about a demonic monster killer than cannot be stopped, has super human strength, and randomly kills innocent people without any motivation whatsoever, there is not really much cause to be mad that the victim characters are little more than pieces of meat waiting to be butchered after their obligatory drinking, drug, or nude scene.

I never bought Jason as a supernatural killer, least not in origin. Ostensibly, as Friday became a monotonous franchise, yeah, it came to be as such in subsequent years. True, I did appreciate the gore and gratuitous nudity, but I was expecting perhaps a bit more, say in line of the TCM remake.

THanks Jen And BD, I also preferred the TCM remake, although it was very flawed. R. Lee Ermey is what saved that one for me. On the other hand, in TCM thre is a whole other element to deal with that Friday never had. You have killers who talk and have some personality, as well as an entire family rather than one killer working alone. You have a subtext about the death of middle America succumbing to the pressures of industrial farming, and a general argument against eating meat. Most of all, you have killers who torture their victims and keep them alive for prolonged periods of time, thus eliciting real sympathy for them and generally making the whole proceeding a less sanitized and more uncomfortable experience. The Friday series never had that. It was always about quick kills of characters that you didn't know well. If anything, this one had a couple of scenes in the beginning bear trap and camp fire that did actually establish some pain and suffering rather than instant death. I don't think the source material is as good. F13 was way inferior to TCM, so the remake turned out to be as well. At least that is how I see it

Great point about the differences between F13 and TCM, I think you're right.

True, I did appreciate the gore and gratuitous nudity, but I was expecting perhaps a bit more, say in line of the TCM remake. I have a different point of view......this film actually mostly fell into line with what I think of when I think of the Friday the 13th series, it was a bit different from the original films sure, but it wasn't trying to do anything original, or be particularly smart, it was just a fun slasher film. Pretty much how I feel about the Friday the 13th films in general. I do not however, like the TCM remake. Because I felt it went AGAINST what the original was. It was too slick, too polished, it really came across as TCM as done by MTV to me.....it was just nothing special, the atmosphere was seriously lacking. And considering the original TCM actually scared the hell out of me, I was pretty disappointed. I felt nothing while watching the remake, except there were a couple of good scenes, here and there. I do have to say though, I loved the casting of R. Lee Ermey. Basically, I mostly agree with HNT, though I don't have much positive to say about the TCM remake.

If we had a poll, I'd go a 4, though on IMDb I'd give it a 9. A lot of stuff I liked here (the opening campfire attack and all the mayhem caused there, the ambush at the house, the speedboat scene and final chase through the underground lair and the brawl through the farmhouse) mixed in with stuff I didn't (why did we have to spend 25 minutes with the opening group if they were supposed to be just quickly eliminated anyway?, the investigations around the town for the missing sister, and the concept of Jason kidnapping someone to begin with) so it kinda evened out a little, even though the positives won out for me.

Well this is labeled a remake, but am I the only one who thinks i could have easily been another sequel?

As long as you can remove the necessary branding of Jason's backstory, totally. Make two small changes (switch out the opening and him acquiring the mask from the stoner, since he's already around, we don't need to know his mother's past and he would already have the mask all along, but I would still keep the kill in there) you could totally call it a sequel.
