Martin is superb. My other favourite vampire film is Near Dark. Bill Paxton NAILS the sleazy modern vamp. A guilty favourite is Revenant. Van Helsing teamed up with LA Crips (or was it bloods?) Genius! JC's Vampires was great for the first ten minutes, I loved Woods' gang of vampire killers comprised of various recognisable bit part and character actors from seventies and eighties action/scifi/horror flicks. Unfortunately they all get killed and the rest of the film is a bit of a turd and has possibly the worst villain since the guy from Rage War.
Getting back on topic I can't really rate H3 as I ain't seen it since I was a kid and expect it will have been in a censored TV form so shall rserve judgment until a nice shiny uncut DVD arrives.

Good point, GP, and one that I almost forgot about. So, let's go ahead and keep the talk back on HIII, and we can reserve this fun Carpenter talk for his thread in The General Horror section.

I got the Universal DVD about 2 weeks ago and am still currently re-watching it. I got about halfway through it and had to stop. Not because it was bad, though.
Just from that first half, I think I understand the movie very well. And am ready to say... I think the one problem with the movie is the Acting. That girl playing Stacy, the curly-black haired daughter of the guy killed at the beginning, is a terrible actress. Also, about half of the remaining cast are awful as well. It's very jarring to have Tom Atkins be the only one trying his hardest to carry the movie through, getting a little help from Dan O'Herlihy, and then that guy playing the drunk comes out and gives the Best Performance in the movie so far.
But other than that, the effects are great, the Silver Shamrock jingle is amazing, the masks are very well-designed, the whole opening and commercial Animation is fantastic, the music score is hypnotic and wonderful. The only thing I want to say is - Marge's death scene is... EIWLEyUGYLHUCK... There is no word to justify its ugliness, so I hope that almost describes the sound that comes to mind when I think of it.

What's that one word you used to describe her death? I tried sounding it out but nothing made sense and it doesn't sound close to anything I know.

I made the word up, man. It was fun for me to do, man. I thought you'd like it too. I thought you would laugh at the word. Didn't I make a funny? Didn't you like it? Dude?
I guess the movie would have been so rychus if Michael had been in it. I was wrong- it sucks without Michael. All my friends went, BRO= WHERE'S MICHAEL?

Now that I know what it is, it reads pretty funny when I say the line out loud, it just threw me when something new appeared on the screen.

JUst rewatched this for the first time in over 2 decades this weekend, and have to say I really dug it.
I have no problem with the fact that it had nothing to do with the 'franchise' per se beyond the fact it happens at Halloween. It's a neat premise, I didn't think the acting was thaaat bad, the deaths are inventive, and it actually manages to maintain a degree of mystery and suspense.
Though I still can't get the ''eight more days to Halloween, Halloween...'' jingle out of my brain!
3 out of five from Toad.

Damn it, Toad. I had just forgotten it, and now I'm hearing it in Slayer. Not the way I want to remember the legends.
But at least it's still a fun song.

LOL, just was listening to that in the car myself. I don't know that I can go along with the Silver Shamock tune being present, but it is definitely a sweet track

Once something's in my mind, it doesn't take a whole lot to be able to un-hear it again. It's a pretty common thing for me, and that happened a couple of times.

Reviving this topic this thread. I watch it EVERY Halloween religiously.
Its so ballsy NOT in the zeitgeist of its predecessors and has the great Tom Atkins in it. 'nuff said for me.
I also dig the electronic synth variation on the iconic theme.
