I like both endings, but I am glad they used the one that is in the movie today.

Still not a huge fan of this movie. But I don't mind it now. BTW Conan. I didn't really destroy my evil dead case and if I did i wouldn't go to hell for it. The Elevevnth commandment: Thou Shalt Not Scribble On An Evil Dead Case.

Of the 3 I think AoD shows the true talent of Bruce Cambell,He is like the bastard child of Curly Howard in the way he presents himself on screen!! He was born for slapstick ! and anyone who thinks that horror cant be funny also is dead wrong hell even Freddy makes me laff

I gave it a 3 because I don't think it's well written and bad writing affects every movie at least a little. And I don't like it- I'm not into "sword and sorcery" type flicks.
But, everything else in the movie works. Bruce Campbell's performance is legendary with good reason. He's charismatic, sexy, a good actor, a great physical-comedian, and fun onscreen. And, well, I think this movie very much perfects what was lacking in Evil Dead 2. Which is- it removes the horror altogether and finally admits: it's an action film with comedy in it. Just because it has zombies in it doesn't make it a horror movie. Disney's Hocus Pocus had a zombie in it.
Anyway, the thing that really dragged the movie down for me was the big final battle at the castle / fortress. I had trouble keeping my eyes open the whole time. But I loved the S-Mart store-ending.

I'd say that 3 is about where I am at with it. I've honestly never understood the big draw to this film. In my reality, its inferior in every way to the films that came before it.

True. But at least it took the franchise in new direction rather than rehashing the first two films (a la Friday the 13th etc)

I think this movie was meant as kind of a gift to the fans of the series. With just a bunch of stuff thrown in that they knew Evil Dead fans would love.
Kind of how Kevin Smith made Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back as a gift to the fans of his previous Jersey movies.

So, it only ended it in a way. I don't think, if they make another movie in this series, that the next one will be anything like this.

I still think Toad's point holds true, however. It is far better than Halloween 4 on, any Friday the 13th film, and all of the NOES films except the 1st and third IMHO.
I personally put the Evil Dead trilogy at the pinnalce of all horror franchises. Only Romero's Dead films are better IMHO. And a convincing argument can be made for this series even against Romero's films. I just personally wouldn't agree

The change in direction with each subsequent film makes this series a little funky. The rehashing of the first film at the beginning of 2 with different actors confuses a lot of people and most people I know don't even realize AOD is a sequel. They think it's a stand alone movie.
It's a good horror trilogy though, no arguments from me.
