Read the review, you two. I bring up those exact same things in it: lovely to look at and listen to, but trying to think about it will give you a headache bigger than the Grand Canyon. It's in there.

I just read it, GL.....I couldn't get the page to come up earlier. Damn error messages. Anyway, great review and I agree. So bless you... HNT: That's true enough. Argento's work is often at least a tad disjointed, BUT for some reason it didn't work as well for me here, I think it is just because the ending bugged me. Not enough to dislike the movie or anything, just enough to throw me out of the experience just a little.

Bless you too, Jen, for the lovely comments. Frankly, the only time I really get confused on stuff like this is usually when I think about motivations rather than plotlines. Usually when I go back and think about a movie like (which is rare, trust me. I'm much more content to just turn it off and let the movie do it's thing) is when I can come up with goofs or inconsistencies in motive. That's the one that usually gets noticed, but it's only upon viewing later. Which is odd, but thinking about a plotline isn't that much of a struggle. New viewing: The Masque of the Red Death-Easily the best of the Corman/Price/Poe series, a masterpiece. imdb.com/title/tt0058333/usercomments-43

Terror Train was awful. And I had to wait years to see that, as when it came to the cinemas with an R18 certificate as a kid I snuck in and was booted out halfway through for being underage by some overzealous usher-person. Just watched Maniac, one of the classis video nasties of the era - a bit dated and clunky in places, but a stellar performance from Joe Spinell and excellent effects by Savini. A very brutal, dark film. www.imdb.com/title/tt0081114/

Maniac is a really cool movie. Well at least the first half is half a cool movie. It loses a bit of steam when Carolyn Munro (it was her wasn't it?) enters the picture. Great effects, though

Night Watch
Interesting, I would say that, overall, I liked it and thought it was a decent vampire flick. Had a pretty unique feel to it. But it is really hard to follow in places. I found my mind wandering at times.

It is hard work at times, but at least it is as original as a film of that sub-genre can be (harking to the remakes thread). I'm looking forward to the second

Oh I am definitely also looking forward to the next one, the last few minutes of this one was really good, I thought. And I loved the first few minutes as well. Just some of the middle lost me a little bit.

You got me into the undead mood jen!
Watched John Carpenter's Vampires last night for the first time.
Absolutely loved it (although Toad's view is skewed by the fact he is a huuuuge James Woods fan). The scripting was tight, and the movie progressed at a cracking pace while not sacrificing characterisation in the process. The vampires were neat and the blood and gore was spectacular. Personally I thought a really great modern take on a genre that has been worked over countless times in repetitive fashon.
The opening sequence at the New Mexico 'nest' is cracker.

The Hills Have Eyes remake.
Okay, it seems to alternate between silly, disturbing, and demented. Which turned out to not be such a bad combination. Better than most of the remakes I have seen recently, BUT it is inconsistent and still, not nearly as good as the original. This one I liked, but it could have been better.

Just watched that again last night for review purposes, and still found it to genuinely frightening, and certainly better than most remakes. It did lack some of the gritty frisson of the original, but I loved the scenes in the abandoned test-site township with the mannequins and dusty rooms - for me that was Aja building on the original rather than just emulating it. The ending was a bit of a let-down, however - after Aja's too smart by half attempted twist in High Tension he went all Hollywood on us.

Yes, the ending was just LAME. But for the most part, the rest of the film exceeded my expectations (though I didn't expect much, I try to keep my expectations low...haha). And at least one scene made me a little ill....so hey, can't ask for too much more than that....LOL

Sheitan. A recent French effort reminiscent in some respects of Hostel, and to be released on DVD later this year. I think it was trying to be a very black horror comedy but I'm not sure. The vibe was that this was supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread (and apparently it did pretty well at the French box office) but I'm afraid it just didn't do it for me. I'll post a review after I've watched it again to see if I missed something.

Hmmm. The French also perpetrated the fraud that was High Tension upon the unsuspecting horror frilmgoing community. TOugh I am a big fan of French cinema (particularly Michael HAneke) I think that horror may not be their strongest suit. For the record, who are we kidding? We all kow tht the minute the killer comes on the scene the p*ssy ass French will immediately surrender, roll over, and play dead (particularly if the killer speaks German) lol
