Brian De Palma's blood-and-sun-drenched saga of a Cuban deportee’s rise to the top of Miami's cocaine business has become something of a popular classic since its release; it's been referenced in rap songs and subsequent gangster movies and quoted the world over. Despite this lovefest with the dialogue, the film’s brutal violence and lack of positive characters still make it controversial and disliked by certain critics. Al Pacino stars as Tony Montana, whose intelligence, guts, and ambition help him skyrocket from dishwasher to the top of a criminal empire but whose eventual paranoia and incestuous desire for his kid sister (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) prove his undoing. Michelle Pfeiffer plays Tony’s neglected coke-addicted trophy wife, and Steven Bauer is his concerned friend. F. Murray Abraham, Robert Loggia, and Paul Shenar are some of Tony’s sleazy business partners and potential killers. Oliver Stone wrote the expletive-packed screenplay, based on Howard Hawks’s 1932 version--which was ostensibly about Al Capone and starred Paul Muni and George Raft. The synth-heavy Giorgio Moroder score expertly evokes the drug-fueled decadence of 1980s Miami, and De Palma provides several of his elaborate set pieces, including a horrific showstopper in a motel room with a chain saw.

Good choice for a thread LdC. Coincidentally just watched this on Saturday evening. Great movie, cheapened only at times by de Palma's self indulgence when it comes to almost repetitive set pieces surroundng Montana and his fall into pear shaped-ness. You sit there thinking 'ok, this is terrific, but I've got the picture... stop labouring the point.' Aside from that gripe a cinematically stunning, and beautifully acted film. 4 from Toad.

Yea it can feel that way. I really liked this film. The 80's feel is what makes it I think. All of the 80's music, fashion, and sets just give off this unique feel. Although this film is overated sometimes Im going to give it a 5.

I give this one a 4. It is a terrific and fascinating film but there are a few fatal flaws. De Palma's direction is a bit self indulgent, and I found that the 80's theme was a bit over the top even for Miami in the cocaine cowboy era. Also, I found Tony's sudden attack of conscience in New York to be quite out of character considering that he has been created as an utterly ruthless and imoral character to that point in the film. That said, the performances are tremendous. Pacino is great as always, and F. Murray Abraham is terrific as well. Michelle Pfeiffer is pretty impressive in this one, playing a characher the likes of which she never attempted again. The film could have benefited from one or two latino actors instead of ust white guys in makeup and phony accents, but his s without question a hel of a lot of fun. and the tension created in the chainaw sequence is as overwhelming and terrifying as anything DePalma has ever done

I found that the 80's theme was a bit over the top even for Miami in the cocaine cowboy era. That is one of the main things I loved about the film. If it wasn't so over the top with the 80's theme I don't think I would have enjoyed it as much.

It is definitely an interesting stylistic decision, but it dates the film badly in my opinion. It lays almost as a parody of the 80's now and doesn't feel as realistic and visceral as I'd have liked the film to feel. That said, Oliver Stone's script certainly does hammer home the obscene ostentatious and self indulgent nightmare that the early 80's were.

Well, I do find this movie a tad tedious at times, but overall, a fantastic film, well acted and the chainsaw scene stuck with me in a way not many have. I still find that scene uncomfortable, an incredibly effective scene. I just didn't find the entire film quite as effective. I give it a 4/5.

I like this one a lot, I'll go with a 5. It's over the top often, but that's what makes it entertaining and that's why it's such a cult classic. I agree that the music and 80's theme dates it.
