I downloaded my fair share as well back on my old computer, I'm just itching to get back on there soon as there's a lot I've seen out there I really want in the collection that is available free online.

Of course we are above insults of others musical tastes, and I apologize if you took offense. In terms of elaborating, I just find his style of rap to be completely dry and unchallenging. His rhymes are pedestrian (not even sure what it means that he "freestyles" as he doesn't ever do anything that lyrically ambitious or challenging anyway). I don't think that he talks about anything particularly interesting. HE is certainly not political or socially engaging in any way. Basically, he just does the standard discussion of making lots of money and doing various silly dances. Not a lot else going on there lyrically, and the beats are standard dancehall stuff. Nothing particularly adventurous in the way that old school PE, Tribe, or even more recent rappers like Mis Def or Talib Kweli are. The best rappers evoke mood and imagery through their beats (like PE's bomb squad making using air raid sirens and whatnot or Tribe or Mos Def relying heavily on jazz bass lines to evoke an earlier more refined era that stands in contrast to the lyrics. Lil Wayne's music does none of this. He is just completely vanilla in my opinion. YOu are entitled to yours and I don't have any desire to change it. I just think that one of the reasons he has to give some of that stuff away is because the stuff that he actually sells is right on the borderline of being too simple and unimaginative to ask anyone to pay money for it I Ah, now Im getting where this misunderstanding comes from. You're right, what sells in and plays(radio) in hip hop today IS bland non political and simple dancehall stuff. That why all you hear on the radio and see in videos and tv performance IS dumbed down stuff he had to put out to make money. In that sense I guess he's certainly guilty or selling out, but.... The rest of his albums and all the free non studio albums I alluded to in my first post are full of lyrically amazing verses full of imagery and political commentary/social conciousness. In fact, lil Wayne is from New Orleans raps about Hurricane Katrina on countless tracks. He really is good with imagery and has some amazing lyrics if you give him a chance. Yes his 5% that is well known is simplistic pop, but below the surface he's an intelligent talent as you'll find out. DO ME THIS FAVOR As the fan of socially concious rap that I know you are, you owe it to yourself. Download "Georgia Bush" by Lil Wayne. I think it will give you a new respect for him.

REplaced a classic in my collection that I had long since lost: MOrbid Angel - Altars of Madness
then picked up Nile-Those Whom the Gods Detest.
Death metal has never been my favorite genre, but as a fan of music I appreciate talent in any form. Nile consistently impresses with the technicality of what they do and the introduction of middle eastern musical themes. Lyrically they are uninteresting, even by this genre's pretty low standard, but their music is about as intense and impressive as it comes.

I always preferred Blessed and Covenant more than Altars, even the aborted first album Abominations of Desolation myself, but at least it's now safe and in the collection.
But you don't find Nile lyrically interesting? The Lovecraftian themes, the idolization of Egyptian culture and heritage and the merging of those were what got me into them before I really was wowed by their musicianship as I wrote them off as Krisiun imitators before I knew better, but I really enjoyed their leaving all the gore and Satanism behind that I was bombarded with when I first started getting into the more extreme stuff.

Well, I agree that Blessed Are the Sick is the best Morbid Angel record, and perhaps my favorite record in the entire genre, so no argument there. I had it already, though, and the friend that I loaned Altars to never wound up snagging it, hence the reason I bought Altars of Madness. It is definitely a hit or miss album, but I think that Maze of Torment is way at the top of the list of the best Morbid Angel tracks ever. As for Nile's lyrics, nah I think they are boring. They are brilliant musicians, especially Sanders, of course, and that is what I like about them. The lyrics all seem a little bit silly, though, in the same sense that the satanic stuff does. Nobody can take it seriously, and it has nothing substantive to say. They do not really pray to Egyptian Gods, so the whole thing comes off as goofy to me. When I look for what I consider good lyrics, I am looking for meaning in them. Maybe it will be about politics, love, or universal experiences that we can all appreciate and relate to. That is what qualifies as interesting lyrically in other genres. I don't find the desire to shock that permeates most extreme metal to be lyrically impressive. I feel the same way pretty much about Nile in the sense that they have nothing much to say that has any impact on the way that I view the world. That is ok. I listen to death metal the way that I listen to jazz or other instrumental music. It is about the sounds created. The lyrics might as well be another instrument becuase it is about creating brutal sounds rather than what is said. In other words, a song about a dung ritual to cast out evil spirits really does not mean a whole lot to me. Yeah, people thousands of years ago seemed to think that rubbing dog crap on themselves would cast out evil spirits. I don't believe it, so a song about it is just silliness. Know what I mean?

I totally get it, I just don't see how it has any merit. Comparing a band like Nile, which if the name, the song titles and the instrumentation styles don't give it away, aren't going around preaching about the power of the human spirit or the triumph of overcoming adversity that are prevalent in other musical genres that automatically makes them silly by comparison. These are accurate descriptions of what happened back in those days, all those different activities, rites and ceremonies they describe are a part of what happened in ancient Egypt, and the fact that I'm getting a history lesson in conjuncture with a brutal beatdown by talented musicians makes them far more interesting than just about every other gore-based/Hail Satan band out there. The fact that they're so different makes them so unique.

Hey, it isn't just extreme metal that I feel this way about. Lots of great bands have pretty stupid lyrics. Look at Led Zeppelin. "Baby squeeze my lemon till the juice runs down my leg" is also nonsense.
AC/DC is plenty of fun, but their lyrics are stupid.
At the end of the day, different music deserves to be evaluated based upon the elements that are important in their respective genres. Nile's lyrics do suck, but I wouldn't hold that against them, because almost all death metal lyrics are terrible. I don't really spend a ot of time condidering the lyrics of a death metal band, because usually they don't want me to. Since Nile always includes lengthy liner notes explaining the motivation behind their lyrics, they seem to be inviting further consideration. Since they did that, I figured it was worth pointing out that they shouldn't bother becuase their lyrics don't stand up to much scrutiny at all.
Still, that is not to say that I don't enjoy the band. I would generally say they are one of my all time favorite bands in the genre, and would give this record 4 out of five stars. It is exceptional.

I'm still a little confused on the matter since it seems like you're basing everything on a one-note basis that's just kinda odd for me to understand. I don't see how they're silly or stupid at all.
