Entertaining sometimes, but doesn't live up to it's reputation.

Finally, someone else who thinks that it's slightly overrated. Yes, I feel the same way. It's entertaining, and was really great when I first saw it, but certainly hasn't aged that well.

Are you both serious? I feel that way about the first F13 for sure, but never Elm Street. Heresy, I dare say!!!

Well, to clerify my position:
I never said it was a bad film. I just don't think it's one that has aged all that well, especially for me. I've seen films more recently that have been a lot more entertaining and enjoyable than my best experiences with Elm Street, and it has moved down a considerable amount since I first saw it. It used to be in the top 20-25, but know, it's dropped down to about the top 100. It's a film that I feel hasn't aged all that well, but it's certainly not a bad film. I do find it pretty good, but I've just seen a lot more that I had more fun with than I ever did with Elm Street.

Had a pretty huge impact on me as a child, and it still remains effective in my opinion. One of the few slashers that I feel tried to show some originality........ also, a killer with a killer personality, that helped. One of the very few films to really scare me, so it is up there with the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre for me. But it is all about personal taste. And thanks HNT....

It certainly is personal preference, but I've just had a lot better experiences with other films since I've seen NOES. Not denying it's a classic, but I feel it's a little overrated.

And me, I could only wish for films that I saw afterward to have such an effect on me as ANOES did, and it didn't happen much.....

Right. We all wish for those kinds of experiences, if reading what you wrote is any indication.

Too true GL... and like Jen I saw NOES at the cinema more years ago than I care to think about and it scared the proverbial out of me. What cheapens the impact for me these days in some part is having watched subsequent entries in the series where Freddy becomes more of a comic character it detracts from the menace of the original when you revisit it.

I still find some of those jokes pretty funny, which is what helps me to sit through them. I just don't like as much as them that they use. After a while, it gets to be overkill and it cheapens the impact of others who use the humor the right way or not at all.

I also agree that unnecessary sequels have dilluted the original's impact. I saw this one in the theater when it came out. I was about 8 and it was the first R rated film my parents let me see. Downright terrifying if you ask me. And it is still quite scary if you manage to ignore some of the more embarassing sequels. Kinda the way that I feel about HAlloween too, now that I think about it

I find several of the sequels very entertaining, but can definitely see how that would happen. I've always been pretty good at separating them apparently. Every time I watch the original, I remember how I felt. So I kind of relive that experience just a bit. The only other two movies I can say that about is the original TCM and The Exorcist. Some other films gave me some good scares (I was always ridiculously easy to scare...one of the reasons I love horror movies and books so much).....but those are the only ones that filled me with something that bordered on absolute dread...LOL.
