I always manage to seperate them whenever I view them. I never feel that this one is better than part 4 or whatever one when I see them. It's just what the film in particular has to offer that I base it on. Then, looking back on the series as a whole, it gets easier to judge them based on how much I enjoyed a particular entry over others.

I haven't rated this yet, so... It gets a 4 from me. I don't think it's aged particularly well. But of course it's one of the most original horror films ever made. It's awkwardly made in a lot of ways too. But re-viewings of the movie prove it's still effective and restrained (surprisingly - for what it helped to spawn) among later horror films of that time. It's unfortunately not a perfect film (acting is very off, several special effects don't look very good, lots of tricks show their "strings"). But it's fascinating and surreal. The music is very good. And many scenes feel very creepy. Wes, for a guy known for making very brutal and starkly-realistic horror films, proved he could direct something very un-realistic and make it as compelling in many ways as his darker, harder films.

Exactly how I am, as well. It hasn't aged, but it's still one of the best ones of the series, compared to what came after it.

When I saw Nightmare 1 at Be Afraid earlier in the year, I thought it had aged terribly to be honest, but a lot of the metaphor shines brighter than it ever did.Nancy's mother is an alcoholic. Her father a cop,Freddy represents the abuse handed down between the generations, and the fact that Lt. Thompson is powerless to stop it.This carries through part 3 as well, where we now find Daddy has succumbed, sitting in a dingy bar, when 'his little girl'comes to him for help one last time.Ultimately, it is her love for him that destroys her..............so the abuse continues........

Good post. I guess you're saying it's dated but the story still succeeds?

Definately, and I just know that it will be diluted in the remake.Craven ( who was a psychology professor) always imbues his films with these atributes no matter how bad the film turns out.Shocker is a great example, I love the film myself, and it is full of shots at the way the whole Nightmare franchise turned into a pop culture phenomenom.

I give it a five. Out of all the horror icons, I was into Freddy the most as a kid.
