I will try it yet again, Toad and even if I can't make it through I will try part 2. If I like it, there is a chance I could go back and appreciate the first one more. I figure there is just something I am missing.

Another remake... Damn...I liked Phantasm alot, it's great just the way it is...Just like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Hills Have Eyes and The Fog...I mean come on...Remakes, remakes, remakes..."Yippie, come on kids...Let's go see the new ...... um.... old movie?" Give me a break...I could go with part 5, that would be cool as hell...But not another remake...It's really sad to hear younger people say... "Hey, did ya see that Texas Chainsaw movie yet?" Then you say..."Yeah, back in like 1980" And then you see the look on their faces as they try to figure out how you saw a movie in the 80's when it was only released in 2001.... They keep makin 'em and we keep seeing 'em...

Caaarn Seeker, don't hold back... tell us what you really think! lol
Seriously though, while I am usually suspicious of remakes (and lament the apparent dearth of fresh, imaginative films that get wide release), I do hold high hopes for this one given Coscarelli's involvment. Fingers crossed.

Hehehe, good points Seeker!
I'd still say this is okay news. I'd rather see a sequel, but this one does have potential as a remake if done right and with Angus Scrimm as the Tall Man. If not, then it'll blow. How old is he though? He seemed old at the beginning of the dvd...

Im sorry but a remake of a classic is not cool. I don't care if the original people are involved or not. Sam Raimi wants to remake Evil Dead, well Sam Raimi is a d*ck and same goes for Coscarelli.

I don't know if this is going to be a remake as such at all - why tamper with greatness. I seem to remember readng somewhere - and this may only have been speculation - that Coscarelli was looking at doing 'another' Phantasm rather than updating the original. I'll keep an eye out for news.

Id rather take a sequel and even a lame sequel any day to a remake of a classic film.

Certainly. And in complete agreement on Phantasm, which Toad would bang on about endlessly given half a chance. Coscarelli remaking this would be like William Golding 're-writing' Lord of the Flies'... sorry I get carried away...

Ah yes, Lord Of The Flies is a good book. I think Of Mice And Men is better though. hehe.
Well, hopefully they will make a phantasm sequel instead. Man that would be fun to see a new phantasm movie in theaters.

Anyone heard anything about the status of this? Or has it died in the arse?

Sorry, haven't heard much about it beyond the new R1 special editions coming out later this year. That's taken up the majority of the Phantasm news I've heard.

This was on Bloody Disgusting recently:
"With the vast amounts of horror remakes already made and the well drying up quickly on what can be done that’s new, one of the last storied horror franchises, PHANTASM, seems a likely target as one of the next films to be re-imagined in Hollywood.
However, PHANTASM director Don Coscarelli says the chances of that happening aren’t likely at least in the immediate future. “I’m reluctant to push forward with anything because I as well as the original cast have created a lot of good will with the fan base and I’ve seen some of the remakes and some of them have really gone south,” Coscarelli says. “They have damaged the original franchises and the original movies to a point that it is a real worry.”
Yet Coscarelli says it would be an opportunity to open the film up to new audiences and generate interest in the original films. While Coscarelli has had discussion with some studios, the chances of seeing a PHANTASM remake any time in the near future is highly unlikely.
“There aren’t a lot of franchises left to remake,” Coscarelli says. “There is desire out there to get it done but nothing has felt right so far. It may happen one day but right now it is not in the cards.”
However, the same cannot be said about PHANTASM 5 as Coscarelli says he already has a completed script for the film and really would love to work with the original cast one more time.
“I would love to work with them again,” Coscarelli says. “Anchor Bay is starting to finance movies and they are eager to get us to make another film but it is a function to find the time.”"

Well that's good news. Hopefully we'll get the sequel instead.
