;D LOS ANGELES, CA, March 10, 2005 – New Line Cinema has struck a deal with filmmaker Don Coscarelli to bring a new version of his cult horror film "Phantasm" to the big screen. Coscarelli will produce the remake of the classic film, which will give a 21st century upgrade to the original 1979 film. The new version of "Phantasm" is being designed as a relaunch of a potential horror franchise. "Phantasm" revolves around the evil “Tall Man” who moves from small town to small town, turning the local dead into slaves as he prepares for an otherworldly invasion. Armed with his deadly Silver Spheres, an army of shrunken warriors and half-man/half-machine constructs, the Tall Man will stop at nothing short of domination over our space and time. It's up to Mike - a young boy with signs of growing psychic power himself - his older brother Jody, and the local ice cream man to uncover the plan and save our dimension from annihilation. The project is being overseen at the studio by New Line executives Jeff Katz, George Waud and Stokely Chaffin. PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY NEW LINE CINEMA

And Coscarelli is doing it. I hope we get Angus Scrimm back as the Tall Man... and Reggie Bannister!!

That would be cool. DWI will be doing something with the Tall Man pretty soon. More on that later.

Personally, I'd rather see the rumored Phantasm 5 take shape, but any news on those silver spheres making a comeback is great news.

I never could get into these movies. I feel wrong, because everyone else I talk to (horror fans) love them. I never even finished the first one, I tried, I really did. I need help...lol....but no surprise about a remake.

Phantasm 5 would be on my fav to see being produced, but, beggars cannot be choosers. I suppose it was inevitable Phantasm would get remade. Let's hope it survives the 21st century 'upgrade'!

Agreed on both counts, though as I said I take comfort from knowing Coscarelli is at the helm. And Jen, give it another shot with Phantasm and then embark on Phntasm II, which IMHO is by far the best in the series.

Exactly right, Toad. Phantasm 2 is the best one. It is really almost a reimagining of the original. I actually enjoy the original as well, but if you don't care for it, you won't miss anything by skipping it and going straight to the second. As for this remake, I don't really see the point. None of the films had a coherent or particularly linear plot. All you need is Reggie, the Tall man, some balls, and a giant tuning fork. Mix them together, add a set that looks like an acid trip in a colorless padded white room and presto. You have every Phantasm film ever made, lol

Hey man, I never said I don't like them. I just said that they don't really make a hell of a lot of sense

That's cool. Toad feels the same way about some of the Argento films he has seen.

HA! Me as well.
As for me, the original is still the King of the franchise, it still floats my boat. Even have the soundtrack, toss it in the cd player every now and then!
*whistles it right now*

Really? I'm a bit of a soundtrack freak. Most of my collection is soundtracks!
