I agree with you completely. This one is marginally inferior to Dawn and Night, but it is an absolute horror masterpiece that I don't watch nearly enough as it is simply a pleasure every time I do watch it. With that in mind, I think I may give it a look this evening

I think I am always harder on this film just because I just didn't find it all that emotionally engaging. It was one of the first times I watched a Romero film where I didn't really care about any of the characters. Its really a very good horror film, and as its been mentioned, the effects are great. And I certainly don't mind the bleak tone. But I think that is what I was missing. After watching it again recently I would now say a 4.

I think my feelings towards Day of the Dead are pretty much along the lines of everyone else. A step down from Night and Dawn of the Dead but still a masterpiece in it's own right. I could give this movie a 5 just for the special effects alone.
