So tell us some of your favorites.
Frankenstein is still my favorite horror novel of all time, actually my favorite novel period. Not only frightening, but emotionally gripping in a way few books are.
Then there is Clive Barker....Cabal, Imajica, The Books of Blood. Stephen King IT, Pet Semetary, Different Seasons, Bag of Bones.
And can't forget Edgar Allen Poe and Algernon Blackwood. Some wonderful short stories. And also Lovecraft, but I have only become a fan of stories rather recently.

I'm an avowed Lovecraft freak but as to more modern horror fiction and novels I don't really read too many. I used to like Shaun Hutson and James Herbert as a kid but these days I'd probably not bother to read them again. They tend to be rather superficial and puerile. Best book of that type I've read and read again as an adult and still enjoyed was The Doll Who Ate His Mother by Ramsey Campbell.

I am a huge fan of King's short stories, but most of his novels leave me cold. He tends to struggle with endings a bit and too many of his stories turn apocalyptic for my taste. I also love CLive Barker. His Books of Blood are great fun. I think that perhaps my favorite, though, is Shirley JAckson

James Herbert is hit or miss with me, I really like a couple of his books, and REALLY don't like others. I enjoy Ramsey Campbell's short stories quite a bit.
I'm a Shirley Jackson fan as well HNT. The Haunting of Hill House and We Have Always Lived in the Castle are two favorites of mine. And I would agree that often Stephen King's short stories, or novellas work better than his novels. I love MOST of his earlier work, but what I dislike, oh I REALLY dislike. For example, The Tommyknockers bugged the hell out of me and Christine was a mess.

I have always loved Kings work. Joe Hill with only 1 novel has a bright future if you ask me.

Huge James Herbert fan, and sometimes Dean Koontz (like JH for Jen I find him hit and miss). Read most of King's but hated Cell and haven't touched him since.

One of my guilty pleasure authors is William Gibson, and while he may not write horror proper, his writing style fits the atmosphere.
I say guilty pleasure out of respect, for sure, Gibson is a great writer . . . only he often is wholly ignorant of the technology he talks about, his only real negative aspect.

Gotta go with anything Lovecraft right off the bat. Then Stoker with Dracula, Richard Lamon is another good one, and one I loved as a kid-R.L. Stine I read more of his stuff as a kid than any other writer.

I never read any Christopher Pike, and I don't know why he was always right next to the RL Stine stuff in my old bookstore, but I just never gave him a chance. Now I think I may have missed something.

Now I think I may have missed something. As I remember, Pike was a little bit more graphic, and didn't really shy away from topics that most writers of popular young adult fiction did during that particular time (sex, abortion, drugs). I remember my mom worked at a bookstore at his most popular, a lot of angry parents.

I'm a HUGE Stephen King fan, I've read pretty much anything he's ever written. Dean Koontz is another favorite, although I think his newer stuff isn't as good. Anything by Poe is awesome, and I've also recently gotten into Jack Ketchum, Brian Keene, and Richard Laymon.

I cannot tolerate the slovenly crafted prose that comprise most horror novels. I haven't yet figured out why many horror writers get the impression that simply because they are writing genre fiction they can leave out their respect for the craft of writing.
