Just revisiting this thread, and thinking I may have to agree with those who ask, well what will the 20 year olds in 2 decades time be thinking defined us?
And that is likely to come from more mainstream releases - I notice here when we're talking defining horror from the past we're not even mentioning the likes of Argento, Romero Deodato. Every single film (and obviously this is only relevant in the post VCR world) had cinematic release.
So for that reason much as I loved, for example, Inside, no bastard outside a horror forum is ever likely to hear about it.
Which is why perhaps the comments about the whole ''torture porn'' (and I hate the phrase too) thing from the likes of Matt and HNT are on the money - which means film of the ilk of House of 1000 Corpses, Hostel, Saw and lesser entries such as Wrong Turn and Wolf Creek.

I concur completely, Toad. I think that torture porn is a lousy name, but it does pretty aptly describe some geerally sucky movies. THE best of that genre are worth watching. As a horror junky, I can groove on some of the more impressive make-up and FX work, but I cannot in good conscience recommend that anyone who hasn't already seen those films bother to check them out. That said, they will be well remembered because they were box office bonanzas. That is the same reason why we still celebrate F13 even though I could name at least 50 superior horror films in the 80's alone
