Characters make the story for me, there is a lot I can forgive when I am reading, I love books and I love to read just about any genre even if the writing isn't necessarily the best, but if I find the characters thin, or completely unbelievable I tend to be put off. Many writers are saved from complete mediocrity because they can create likeable, or memorable characters....and other writers who have great ideas are hurt by the fact that they just can't.
So who are a few of your favorite literary characters, those that you really believed, those that you could relate to, or those that fascinated you and kept you reading?

Great thread, my illiterate ass somehow missed it up until now.
Gilgamesh comes to mind as a history major.
Captain Ahab
Robinson Crueso
The Old Man (and the Sea)
Johnny Tremaine
Whoever that kid was in the book Hatchet, loved it as a kid.
And the kid in the book Dear Mr. Henshaw
Read those last 2 years ago as a kid and can't remember the names of the main character.
