I'm surprised there hasn't been a thread dedicated to,arguably, one of the best sci-fi shows, nay, best dramas on TV in recent memory. If there is a thread, please forgive me, I might have over-looked it.
I grew up watching the original T.V. show and loved it. Granted I was about 10 or 11 and Star Wars was in theaters, so 0I gravitated to this show like meteors falling in the Earth's atmosphere. I was skeptical about the remake and did not view its televised run. I caught up with the new BG on DVD and I thank the Lords of Kobol for that!
It is dark, gritty, allegorical, character driven and just when you think you've got the characters figured out-BAM- you don't and they weren't afraid to do so, even with the main stars.
If you enjoy good sci-fi and complex dramatic narratives, then by all means, scoop up this series.

I have yet to see even one episode but have the first season on my Netflix list. If my budget allowed, I would just buy it, because you definitely aren't the first person I have seen praise it so highly.

I bought the first season (including mini-series) on a whim and the sale clerk at Best Buy RAVED about it, could not stop saying how good it was. I was skeptical at such high and unsolicited praise. But, he was frakkin' spot on. I recommend bumping it up to the top slots in your queue. The writing is consistently top-notch and the actors really immerse themselves in their respective roles, plus the soundtrack is quite haunting and evocative.
I look forward to Caprica series in 2010
BTW- the pilot 'film' on sci-fi channel was quite good as well.

I had the 1st & 2nd series on dvd, but sold them so i could upgrade to blu-ray. Then they 'revealed' the final 5, and it all went downhill fast. I really doubt that this was the original intention, but simply was a way to 'end' the series at 4 seasons. After watching the final episode, i really no longer wish to see it again. Which is a shame as i was totally into it when it first came out. Seasons 1 & 2 rank right up there, while 3 & 4 are simply terrible.
Thus, the 'revelations' of the last season pretty much make "Caprica" null & void as far as i'm concerned. Same goes for "The Plan" special, which i wont even bother with.

I can see how the narrative tone shifted in season 3 and 4 that may have turned people off. I think the writers may have painted themselves into a corner, but again, IMHO, the revelation of the final Five added to the dramatic complexity of the series.

The first reveal of the final five, particularly the choice of music, really got up my nose and the lack of follow through on some ideas presented in Razor was disappointing. When I invest so much time in a show I always have high expectations and they were let down a little however it did pick up again and I thought the final half of season four was pretty fantastic. All in all it was extremely satisfying to see a deep and very mature scifi drama that had a solid beginning, middle and end. The only other TV show I have watched over recent years that I could say the same of is The Shield. I just wish Deadwood had been allowed the same luxury. I have BSG preordered on Bluray and look forward to watching it all again.

I think within the narrative structure of the series there were lapses in the tonal 'arc' of the BG universe. I do agree, for some nits here and there, it is indeed refreshing to see a show of this complexity and maturity.
I found The Wire to be equally compelling. A great show that deserved a wider viewing audience.

I havent seen much of BG but I did watch The Wire on HBO. That was a really great show. They actually replay it on BET (not that that's a wide audience) but it's of course butchered to shit.

BG is worth looking into. You shan't be disappointed.
The Wire was one of the best police dramas on T.V. Perhaps one of the most realistic police procedurals around. Too bad it ended at season 5.
I could not watch it on network or non-pay cable tv. I cannot tolerate severly edited shows!!!

Watched the miniseries and the first couple of episodes last night and I have to say, I am completely in love with this show so far. Or maybe it is simply infatuation..... Too soon to tell, I guess. The characters are surprisingly well developed and the acting is good, so I find it emotionally riveting in a way that I wasn't really expecting. Really glad I picked this up.

One of the funniest things on the commentary for the new edition of Blade Runner was when Edward James Olmos confused Cylons with Replicants

You do get sucked in rather quickly. It is compelling viewing on so many levels.
