Filmed in 1969, The Oblong Box is an adaptation of Edger Allen Poe's short story of the same name, starred Vincent Price and Christopher Lee. This film would mark the first time that the two legends of horror appeared together, they would go on later that year and film "Scream and Scream Again"
They would not appear in the same movie again until 1983.
Price plays a plantation owner who has recently come back from Africa, along with his brother, who unfortunately met with a horrible fate. He had killed a young boy by running him over with his horse, the slaves then cursed him, he would eventually turn into the living dead.
As I'm sure many of the members of CLAD are aware that until George Romero made the classic "Night of th Living Dead" the concept of zombies was that they were individuals who had died or were murdered and then brought back to life through the practice of some Voodoo or Black Magic spell/ritual.
Romero introduced the idea that if you are bitten by a zombie you will become a zombie yourself. The Oblong Box while still following the convention of past Voodoo minded zombie films (White Zombie starring Bela Lugosi) this particular zombie movie became the first beneficiary of Romero's brand new conceit.
The Oblong Box is fairly graphic for its time, featuring many scenes of people getting their throats slit, and some partial nudity.
The only thing that is disappointing about the movie is the fact that Vincent Price and Christopher Lee are only in one scene together.......
......And one of them is dead
9 out of 10 stars
The only reason I don't give it 10 stars is simply because there are far better and more classic Vincent Price films, IMO "Scream and Scream Again" is a far better movie, and that shall be my next review.
