This series had 2 fabulous seasons on HBO, it is one of the greatest series that has ever dealt with the Roman era. The series is filled with blood, decapitations, swords ripping through flesh, a veritable gore fest.
The characters are compelling and the acting is superb, the series thrived for historical accuracy and it leaves nothing out, all of he decadence of the Roman empire is commented upon in the show, while other shows tend to leave out the more depraved aspects of Roman life, "Rome" does not.
"Family dysfunction. Treachery. Betrayal. Coarse profanity. Brutal violence. Graphic (and sometimes brutal) sex. No, it's not The Sopranos, it's Rome, HBO's madly ambitious series that transfixed viewers with its lavishly mounted spectacle. Set in 52 B.C., Rome charts the dramatic shifts in the balance of power between former friends Pompey Magnu, leader of the Senate, and Julius Caesar"

The best HBO series. EVER. Truthfully, it just edges out The Sopranos. It's a shame it only lasted two seasons.
I'm sure Starz series Spartacus will inevitably be compared to Rome, but I don't think its going to on the same level. Spartacus seems to be striving for more 300 style action and violence and sex, not necessarily a bad thing, but Rome is the shit, baby.

It is, John Mileus (Conan series) did a fantastic job creating this show.

I loved Rome. I am a huge fan. Shame that HBO decided not to make any more seasons. This one was cancelled at around the same time that HBO dumped Deadwood (another favorite of mine) and that all kind of pissed me off. Personally, I would say that Six Feet Under was the best HBO show ever and THe Sopranos and the Wire tied for number two, but this one is very much right in the hunt.
I also thought of this one when I saw commercials for the Spartacus series. Has anyone seen it? Should I take the time to check it out?

I watched the free preview for the series on "On Demand" yesterday, its pretty good, no where as good as Rome, basically its The 300 meets Gladiator....the series.
Its mostly about the special effects, whereas Rome is more of a character piece, frankly I liked it but didn't find it as compelling as Rome, its a perfectly good show from what I saw, though the "300 slow motion" type effects are a little overused....do you really need to see people cheering in slow motion.
Pretty good, I might watch more of it.

Dang, I forgot about the Wire. HBO had a great run there for a few years.
I was tempted to watch the Spartacus first ep on Starz on demand last night, but it was beddy late.
The series look like it has promise.

I look at the differences between Rome and Spartacus as representative of the clash between the horror movies of yesteryear and today. Rome is old school blood and guts mechanical wizardry, while Spartacus is the modern trend of sticking CGI effects on everything in lieu of good film making, except that Spartacus is actually pretty decent.

Haven't seen Rome, its on the Netflix queue, maybe I should move it up (though I am trying to catch up with way too much television already.... ). Sure I am going to love it. Carnivàle is still my favorite HBO show though, probably my favorite show ever. Still saddens me that there was only two seasons. Six Feet Under and Deadwood are also favorites of mine.

Most video downloads don't work on my iPhone aside from YouTube, so I'll probably have to get the DVD.
