Question...."What did people think of the movie?"
Answer....."They hated it, they still hate it, the people who ran the company, even though the company does not exist anymore, still hate the movie" -the Director
Thats about sums up The Dark Backward in the minds of the average movie goer, a total flop 15 years ago, today a modern cult classic, though a bit obscure even to cult movie fanatics.
The basic story:
Marty Malt, portrayed by Judd Nelson, is a terrible stand-up comedian, a failure in every respect, a Schmuck, loser, who just happens to have a hand growing out of his back. Marty goes from an unknown stand-up comedian to astounding heights of success....well....?
Bill Paxton is Gus, he eats garbage and plays the accordion.
These characters are by far the most extreme characters performed in film, they are gross, deviant, and certainly unlike anything Judd Nelson and Bill Paxton have ever played. The world is in totally of its own, dirty, scummy, and dystopic.
Judd Nelson lost a lot of weight for the role of Marty Malt, Paxton is great as Gus, no holds bar, from having sex with 600 pound woman to eating disgusting concoctions.
It takes a certain kind of viewer to enjoy this film, will you enjoy it? Well if you can get past the scene of Gus licking the corpse of a woman which he finds at the dump-yard, then you will love Th Dark Backward............and if you like this movie, your obviously a very weird person................And we're glad to have ya.
About the jokes that Marty tells in his act..............they are very, very, very bad....so bad that you will laugh your ass off upon hearing them.
Oh yeah Wayne Newton is also in the movie as a sleazy talent agent
Not to mention the participation of
Rob Lowe
Lara Flynn Boyle
King Moody "the original Ronald McDonald"
