Just ask anyone over at Crystal Lake After Dark Yeah, there's a reason I've been a member there as long as here but haven't posted there in years

Watched Survival of the Dead last night with extremely low expectations after the risible mess that was Diary of the Dead. This was worse. Truly, truly terrible.

Yeah, I can't defend this one really at all. I give it a 2 because I was not so bored that I had to turn it off. I thought Diary was far superior, but this one just didn't do anything at all for me. Personally, I just hope that Romero has an opportunity to do the types of films that he really wants to do, because he has made some of my all time favorites in his lifetime. It'd be great if he would move away from zombie films and try something a bit different. In any case, though, he's not a young guy, so really what I want is for him to end his career and life doing something that makes him happy. Its more than many of us get to have.

I added a poll.
I thought the film seemed a bit rushed to me.I much preferred it when Romero was doing a zombie film every decade or so,instead of every three years.

Yes, he clearly needs to move in another direction. And while I of course love Night and Dawn, many of his bests weren't even zombie movies so I don't understand the hesitations. I guess because it wouldn't be as marketable...

I don't think that the hesitatiion is his. Its all about what he can get financing to make. A Romero zombie film seemed like a marketable idea for a while because Night, Dawn, and to a lesser extent Day were some of the most profitable independant films ever made. Studios still wouldn't touch a Romero zombie film until after the runaway success of 28 Days Later and the DOTD remake. Even then, it was a devil's bargain because Land of the Dead could not contain any of the traditional Romero zombie gore because the studio demanded an R rated film for the theaters. He then went back and did Diary and Survival on very small budgets, which I give him a lot of credit for even though I didn't care for Survival much at all. If there is one thing about Romero's career that differentiates him from the other horror masters of his caliber, it is that he was never willing to play ball with the major studios. He was perfectly content to continue to make independant low budget and B horror films rather than compromise his visions to meet the studio expectations. Diary and Survival might not be your cup of tea, but they are 100% his vision and that is worth something in itself

Romero has always been a favorite of mine. Like you guys have pointed out, even not counting his 'dead' films he still has made classics like Martin and The Crazies. I haven't even attempted to watch Diary or Survival of the Dead after I saw Land of the Dead, but now I'm thinking I should go and try to download these just to see what Romero has been up to recently.

Saw this one last night, and for what might be the first time in the history of the board, I might be the one that likes a Romero film the most, even though I'm giving it a 3. This isn't all that bad of a zombie film, especially a Romero one, as this one decides to go back to the original series idea of introducing a decidedly-original tactic for the continuation of the zombie plague, training them to not devour human flesh and attempt to eat something else. While the religion-based logic it's used to try that is the film's single-biggest flaw as listening to those faulty and pig-headed speeches that just make the characters sound more brain-dead than the zombies and get old after a while, the fact that it's a new concept works pretty well. The zombies aren't that bad-looking, the gore is certainly enough to stay interesting despite the lack of either originality in kills or execution as it really lacks a stand-out kill one way or another the way the others in the series have done, but overall it's mostly enough to forget the religion introduction that really hurts this one.
