The sixth installment in Romero's Dead trilogy is nearing release.I'm still yet to see Diary, so I'm not sure what to expect. Thoughts?

Coming from one of the single biggest zombie-film apologists in the universe, forget Diary. It's not that good, and is really not that worth it.
As for this one, haven't heard anything about it other than the title. I'll need more info to form an opinion.

I'll second GL on the contention that 'Diary' isn't even worth seeking out. I didn't have very high hopes going into it and I was still disappointed, so take from that what you will.

Haven't heard too much about this either, but I'll definitely see it. Can't really seem to work up too much excitement for it though, didn't care for Diary of the Dead at all.

I'll probably see it to, just for completeness sake (if I start a film series and I know there's sequels, I have to see all of them, just because I feel weird leaving blank holes in my collection) so I'll come to this one sometime.

Wow, I am constantly surprised by how much negativity there is around Diary. I thought it was amazingly entertaining and fun, and I far prefer it to Land of the Dead. I thought it dealt really well with reality television, the internet, Katrina, the war in Iraq, and the usual political issues raised in Romero films. I thought the opening was really funny, and I generally dug it more than just about anyone else I know. That said, I am a huge Romero fan, and probably give him more of a pass than he deserves.

I see Diary's going cheap on Deep Discount so I'll pick it up soon.I did going to a festival screeningwith Toad but slept(drunk) through the entire thing . I haven't rushed to get it as i've become Sick of the Dead, through all the sixth rate ... of the Dead zombie so called "comedies". I'd like to see Romero do something else again.I was quite fond of his last non zombie film - Bruiser.

Yeah, Bruiser was a really excellent little film and I agree that Romero should do another non-zombie film. I don't see him getting financing for anything else soon, though. Hell, the only reason that he is having such success getting zombie films out is because of the resurgence of the genre based on inferior films like DOTD remake and 28 Days/Weeks Later. The stories of his struggles to finance his earlier films are well known and depressing. Given those struggles, I am just happy that in the twilight of his life he will get to go out making moveis rather than losing his fight for the opportunity to do so.

True, indeed, you do have a point, HNT. The problem is, I have little to no interest in films featuring a political agenda in them. I have no interest in such a matter anyway, to be inundated with it in a film is, to me, crossing a line I don’t really want to. It’s sort of like religion, in that the mere mention of it in any form is a tactic which doesn’t interest me at all, so for the film to do that, in what you accurately described as ‘the usual political issues raised in a Romero film’, is going to be a strike against the film already without even going into the other problems associated with it, namely that the film is just utterly boring. There’s hardly any real zombie action in it, outside of a few moments where we are brainwashed into believing so in order to keep the illusion of this being a zombie film, but really, the action is far too spread out, and not all that good when it happens anyway, to have any real impact. It really needed more scenes like the hospital encounter to really sway me over to it. And none of those issues are bringing up the elephant in the room when it comes to this one: the utterly irritating, beyond forgivable and completely useless 'real-world camera style' utilized in this. The shaking-camera effect, as it's better known, doesn't have a place in these movies, it's a tactic which should be done with since you can't see anything at all, it's not all that inviting to watch even when there's no action, and it just gets old after a while. That, to me, is why I hate this movie. I know 7th had other reasons, but I'll go with mine for now.

So has anyone watched it yet? I've been close to ordering the R2 disc from Amazon UK a couple of times but then discovered an Oz release is imminent

Not yet, but I also want to. Anyway, it is a Romero zombie film so it is a must order either way. Might as well just take the plunge, I say

This went straight to DVD? After Diary, I'm not surprised, but I figured it would've gone to theaters. Explains why I haven't seen the trailers for it yet.

Well we watched it last night.....
And the best part was the introduction. I found it more entertaining than Diary for some reason (I think because I found the cast more likable), but not because I think its any better. The cheese factor is REALLY high, the humor is often forced, and the CGI is terrible. And because of that, and the fact that so much of it seems to be played for laughs, there is not a single scare.
That being said, I was never really bored. But it still managed to disappoint me.

Sometimes I wonder if we'd have been such big fans of the original trilogy if we were around when they came out? I mean, it is always easy for us to harken back to the way things used to be and the way that they used to make movies, but I don't know taht this offers us the most objective view of these things. At the time the Hammer films were coming out, for example, most people considered them inferior low budget Universal ripoffs. Today, I think they deserve some credit in their own right. I wonder sometimes whether we lack the right perspective to really consider what we are looking for with new horror films, and whether we need a bit of time to really evaluate them. Sometimes its easy. No question that The Hills Have Eyes remake is high quality and the Prom Night remake is not. What about those films that are in between, though. THe ones that are only alright. Are we sometimes too hard on them because they are coming out today and we lack real perpective on them?
