A 3. Overlong and self-pretentious, not a lot of true horror and a completely nonthreatening vampire, no real connection to the original novel and a chore to sit through, although the violence and a rousing finale are about the only thing good with this one.

I actually think this is actually quite a bit MORE faithful to the original novel than most other adaptations. There is a lot here from the story that is usually omitted from most of the films, but of course there are changes (most notably the love story between Mina and Dracula, and the beginning) and things that are left out or added.
I love this movie, despite its flaws (of which there are many). It IS overly romanticized, and some of the casting is ridiculous. I mean, Keanu Reeves? Seriously, what the hell were they thinking? But Gary Oldman is actually one of my favorites in the role, and I love the look and the feel of the film. Its very epic and romantic, and actually balances the horror quite nicely with those elements, in my opinion.
It gets a 5 from me, though I can see why some others might not like it (or hate it even), it really is a bit pretentious.

Anyone who dislikes this movie id out of their mind, this is one of the greatest Dracula/vampire films ever made. The effects in it are absolutely beautiful and were all done practically, there is only one optical effect in the entire movie, that being the blue rings of fire that the carriage drives through at the beginning.
Gary Oldmen is one of the best actors there is, probably the best portrayal of Dracula after Lugosi, Willem Dafoe and Anders Hove.
Hands down one of the coolest looking Dracula's, counting all the various looks that he had n the movie, my fav being the bat-creature.
I waited for a decade for this to be release on DVD, every time I went into a store I would look for it, finally released on DVD a few years ago, one of my favorite vampire films.

Saw this one for the first time the other week, after having picked it up since it was a really cheap Blu Ray on amazon. Loved it. Abraxas, youre right about the great visuals. I loved the fantastic use or bright colors. Oldman was exceptional. And I agree that Keanu was the only big negative for this one Jen. Watched it expecting a decent Dracula film, and got what I certainly believe to be one of the best.
4/5

I just found it way too overblown and not all that scary. Too much style, not enough substance.

I never understood the "too artistically made" complaint about certain movies, seems an old criticism, the same thing was said about The Hunger, another beautifully stylistic film.

It's a perfectly serviceable complaint. If all the pros I found for the film are relegated to how it looks while all the cons are based around the technical aspects of filmmaking (the story is confusing, hard to understand, or just full of holes, etc) then it can be said to be a film with 'all style, no substance.' Sort of like Avatar.

I feel the same, if a film looks great, but is lacking in other ways, then I often will lose interest. A movie can be beautiful, but totally boring in every other way. Obviously, I don't feel that way about this film, but I get what GL is saying.
I always figured the main issue with this film is changing so much about the character of Dracula, turning him into an almost tragic, romantic figure rather than one of pure evil. But I admit that, while I appreciate the importance of the book and how much it has influenced horror, I find it more tedious than anything. So the changes didn't really bother me. I don't mind romanticized movie monsters, but I can see why others would be put off from this movie by that.

I like this movie. I don't necessarily agree that it has style over substance, but even it does, style can carry you quite far . . .
