Godzilla: Final Wars (2004) is the fiftieth anniversary film and the twenty-eighth film in the Godzilla series. It is a part of the Millennium series and serves as a direct sequel to the original Godzilla. It was directed by Ryuhei Kitamura and produced by Shogo Tomiyama. This is the only Godzilla film, from the Japanese series, to receive a PG-13 rating by the MPAA. It is the only Godzilla film to feature Monster X who transforms into Keizer Ghidorah
Despite the title, this is not the final Godzilla film; Toho has decided to temporarily "retire" the character for a period of time.
Endless warfare and environmental pollution has brought forth giant monsters, which are a grave danger to the world. As a result, the Earth Defense Force (EDF) is created to protect the planet, uniting every nation. The organization is equipped with some of the best of technology and weapons, warships and soldiers, as well as mutants with super-human abilities.
On opening weekend it barely made 2 million dollars, not only was it the least-attended film in the Millennium series, it was also the least attended film in 29 years since Terror of Mechagodzilla.
David Cornelius of eFilmCritic gave the film two stars out of five, calling it "the dullest, weakest Godzilla movie I've seen in a long, long time."
Ty Burr of the Boston Globe gave the film one and a half stars out of five, saying it focused too much on action and not enough on story, and calling it "35 minutes longer than is necessary."
Mike Bogue of American Kaiju said "the film is flawed," saying there are "too many [Matrix-style] battles"
Stomp Tokyo criticized the film's "incoherence," saying: "It's a shame that Kitamaura couldn't choose a tone for the film, instead shifting the movie's mood wildly from scene to scene."
Well that's 2 hours of my life Ill never get back, this film is absolutely atrocious, for most of the film I wasn't so much watching it, as I was preying for it to end. What an utter piece of garbage, this was not a Godzilla film, it was The Matrix, X-Men, Underworld, a bad kung fu flick, all rolled up into a mind numbing, tedious, contrived, genre raping, trendy mass.
As I said above it is not a Godzilla movie, its a Japanese film company trying to cash in on trendy minded film making that existed in American in its day. I'm sorry but when Godzilla starts doing Matrix bullet-time styled Kung Fu moves, its going way too far.
The special effects are sub par in places, Baby Godzilla looks absolutely ridiculous and serves no purpose within the film, beyond trying to entice children to see the film.
The movie goes nearly an hour before they show Godzilla, having only appeared for a few brief moments at the beginning of the film. A few of the effects associated with him are really inferior to those of earlier films within the Millennium series.
I cant even count how times this film rips off the Matrix, I don't just mean in concept, there are some parts in the fight toward the end of the film with the two main characters which are shot for shot.
I particularly love the part where it turns into Independence Day, a guy flies his jet into the big ship to knock out their enemies force feiled. That's all this movie is....unadulterated, no shame rip off of other films.
Not only is this the worse Godzilla movie, its one of the worse movies I have ever seen, its just lucky there is no 0 on my current rateing system.
1 out of 5.........doesn't even deserve a roar
GL and I have totally different veiws of this film, he likes it, I hate it, and so Im sure this will get the biggest reponce here, at least from us.
