Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, released in Japan as Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla is a 1993 film directed by Takao Okawara and written by Wataru Mimura. It was the twentieth film in Toho's Godzilla series and the first to feature BabyGodzilla.
The Japan Self Defense Forces lift the remains of Mecha-King Ghidorah from the ocean. Using the armor and robotic technology they create Mechagodzilla, a super weapon that they hope will finally kill Godzilla. On a mission to an island in the Pacific, a Japanese team comes across a dinosaur egg. They take the egg and attract Godzilla and Rodan after stopping the fight that they are engaged in. The egg is taken back to Japan where it hatches into BabyGodzilla. Tests on BabyGodzilla reveal that he has a second brain in his hips that control his legs and tail. They decide to use BabyGodzilla to bait Godzilla to them and use the G-Crusher, a system designed to destroy Godzilla's second brain. Rodan, now transformed into Fire Rodan, is attracted to the bait as well, he turns his attention to Mechagodzilla and attacks, losing horribly, being no match to the super weapon. Godzilla is revived when Fire Rodan sacrifices himself and transfers his remaining life energy to Godzilla. Mechagodzilla combines with the airship Garuda and turns into Super Mechagodzilla.
Godzilla is enraged by Rodan's death and uses his newly acquired spiral atomic ray to destroy Super Mechagodzilla as revenge.
Lets first start off with the effects in the film, the look of the monsters is impeccable, as one reviewer commented. Rodan and MechaGodzilla get a new cool look, and Godzilla is awesome looking, just as he was in the previous films of the 1990's period. This has some of the greatest monster battle scenes. One odd thing is that in the Heisei period Godzilla and Rodan are enemies, which they hadn't been since the Showa series. BabyGodzilla is a million times better looking the he was in the original films and I think the new abilities that Godzilla and others gain in this period are pretty neat. I also like what they did with the MechaGodzilla character, being piloted by humans.
Production wise this movie is very strange, the dialog is in Japanese but there are American voices in it but for the most part these are limited to technical concerns, for instance the actors who control MechaGodzilla speak English but only when they are in the robot. I don't understand why they just didn't dub the entire film, also there are no subtitles for any of the dialog. Not even the Americans have subtitles for their dialog, which makes no sense, this film was never released in America, only in Japan so why didn't they have Japanese subtitles for the English. This might have something to do with the way in which I have watched it, apparently there is a dub soundtrack for the DVD.
EDIT: I have since found a dubbed version of the film, making this installment even better, one of the best Godzilla films.
5 out of 5 roars for this one (even though I couldn't understand the dialog)
