Does anybody else enjoy the odd Silent Classic? I know that I do. PErsonally , I would have to go with The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari as my favorite. It is hella dated, but even still has some genuinely creepy scenes. In any case, the old silent classics serve as a nice reminder that we owe this genre that we love not to the Americans or the Italians, but to the Germans. Smart folks they were back then (before that little Adolph mishap 25 years down the road).
I suspect that London After Midnight would've been oe of the greats as well had the print not been completely torched so that no one can see it today. Can't help but love Chaney's make-up in that one. What do you all think?

Nosferatu for Toad. Even by today's standards it is eerily atmospheric and managed to scare my kids (who usually refuse to watch B&W films).
The scenes on the boat in particular are just masterfull.

Metropolis is actually the film responsible for my ban on silent horror, I don't see it as one at all and was just utterly bored by it. Then there's the lack of speaking that I just can't get into at all which has put me off these films altogether.

Metropolis is not a horror film at all. Trust me, Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is the one to watch if you are only going to watch one. It is the most visually striking, and you will get something out of it even if you generally don't appreciate silent films.

Nosferatu is one of the only ones I've seen but it was superb.
The makeup in Phantom of the Opera was cool and creepy.

It is the most visually striking, and you will get something out of it even if you generally don't appreciate silent films. I'll certainly give it a shot, but the main thing I have against them is that I've gotten so used to hearing dialogue and talking that it's become sort of like a comforting mechanism for me when I watch it, it's just too disorienting not hearing people speak during films. That was a big reason why I wasn't a big follower of silent horror when I was just getting into films, and the few I've tried to watch are just a little bit too discomforting because of that.
