Son of Godzilla (released in Japan as Monster Island's Decisive Battle: Godzilla's Son), is a 1967 film. The eighth of the Toho studio's Godzilla series, it was directed by Jun Fukuda with special effects by Eiji Tsuburaya and Sadamasa Arikawa. It is the first film to feature Kamacuras (giant Mantis'), Minilla, and Kumonga (giant spider).
Well we knew this time would come, we have reached the point where everything becomes a little silly and convoluted. This particular Godzilla film introduces elements into the series that are far more child friendly then we have seen in previous installments. It introduces baby Godzilla, or Minilla (known in the cartoon which aired on TV, as Godzuki). This really makes no sense because Godzilla is a male and in this film he is said to be Minilla's father, which makes you wonder where his mother went.
Scientists are working on a device that can change the climate, the idea being that they would eventually be able to turn dry desert into fertile land. But something keeps interfering with their transmissions, this odd frequency turns out to be the physic cries of baby Godzilla in his egg calling for his father. Three giant Praying mantis' find the egg and break it open, they then proceed to poke at babyzilla, Godzilla hears his calls and fights off the three giant bugs, two of them are killed and the third escapes.
This is a fairly light hearted film, but without much of the humor that had made its way into the last few films, although there is one particularly funny scene where babyzilla gets hit in the face with a boulder. Much of the action is cute in nature, babyilla hasn't mastered the ability to breath his atomic fire and so Godzilla has to step on his tail to make him do it. Basically the movie consists of Babyzilla getting into trouble and his father rescuing him.
Godzilla himself looks more humanesque with big goggle eyes and his body is more cartoonish, he looks like a big cuddly scaly puppy. I must admit that it is entertaining, its guaranteed to make you feel all fuzzy inside.
Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster and Son of Godzilla were distributed directly to television.
In the US version which has only a few minor edits, Kamacuras' name was changed to Gimantis, Kumonga's name was changed to Spiga.
