I know we all have them. You know those moments where you stare at your collection, pondering what to watch? Do you want something you've never seen before or something particular.Or do you stare blankly, not quite sure what you feel like?So you grab your nearest failsafe - default movies that you just know will never disapoint,no matter what your mood.
So what do you fall back on?

Yes I think I've stared at my collection for 2 hours straight not knowing what to watch no lie.
I do have default movies and I usually opt for corny but entertaining ones rather than truly "good" movies. My defaults are Halloween 4, Independence Day, and more recently Hackers.
But I haven't watched ID in a while and am going to try to hold off on H4 until next Halloween.
Oh, and The Dark Knight is probably my default Blu Ray, ive watched that like 5 times in the 6 months I've had it.

Ron and I have gotten to the point in our movie collection that some days there are TOO many choices. So yeah, we often can't decide and it's hard to find something that matches both of our moods. But Evil Dead 2, Jaws, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and Stand by Me are movies I KNOW I can watch anytime and enjoy them, no matter what. Harold and Maude would fit into this category for me as well, but I haven't been able to find a copy of it.

For me, there are two kinds of default movies. THere are the ones that I always return to, and then there are the ones that I've seen so many times that I would almost never choose to watch them on DVD, but when they come on television, I always stop what ever I am doing and watch them, no matter how inconvenient.
The DVD's that I will always go back to are Dawn of the DEad (78) THe Godfather The Godfather 2 Goodfellas
Movies that halt me in my tracks to watch on tv, but that I rarely watch on DVD
JAws The Exorcist Natural Born Killers Rosemary's Baby

I do have default movies and I usually opt for corny but entertaining ones rather than truly "good" movies. I'm the same, I mainly go for my defaults when i'm drunk(which is often ) so I'm usually looking for something cheesier, and that I know so well that I don't have to give it my full attention and doesn't matter if I pass out. To this end I would definately include Shocker, Trick or Treat and The Hidden. And I go back to The Fog alot too. The slasher is my default genre, I guess because for the most part you don't have to give them a lot of thought. When I really stuck though,I usually end up with The Simpsons.

Zombie 2. It's the only movie I've ever watched every year since I've gotten it and it's the movie I've watched the most in my life. This year it'll finally pass Die Hard for that honor.
Frankly, the first two Predator movies would count if I could only finish them: I watch Part 1 up to the slaughter of Blaine and the commandoes going ballistic on the jungle for several minutes, than coming back to say they hit nothing, at which point I usually turn it off and switch over to something else, but I watch it up to that point just to hear the gunfire just absolutely destroy my speaker system, plus it's one of the greatest guy-moments ever in a guy-movie, and that's important for me. In Part 2, I don't even get that far into the film, just the opening shootout in the streets and then the resulting rampage in their headquarters, and once the last guy gets shot onto the car on the street, I turn that one off. I usually just watch those on TV and have it pretty much wired when I'm going to catch those scenes so I have it timed out when to turn on to watch them.
But if we're counting full movies, Zombie 2. I usually never rewatch anything anyway since there's always something else new to watch, and why waste time on something I know will entertain me when I can discover something new to do that?

This was a cool thread idea, let's revive it. I have the Scream films on Bluray now so I go back to them a lot especially after not owning them for several years. Evil Dead 2, Jaws, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and Stand by Me are movies I KNOW I can watch anytime and enjoy them, no matter what. I like the LOTR trilogy a lot but I'm surprised you can watch them anytime. I can't because they're so long and sow I have to be in a certain mood.

That commentary track is awesome. One of my favourites and one of the few I've listened to more than once, along with Carpenter and Russell on The Thing and the band commentary on This is Spinal Tap.

I know this is a pretty stupid question GP but I assume you mean John Carpenter's The Fog and not the abomination of a remake?
I reckon I could add Shaun of the Dead to my list.I never get tired of that.

I hate that we live in a world where we have to clarify these things That's why nowadays I always add John Carpenter's to any film he's done
