When a series of strange deaths around him confirms his suspicion that his next-door neighbor is hiding a terrible secret, a kid and his friends recruit a TV horror-show host to help him battle the deadly enemy before he manages to take more victims. What did you think of this one?

This is just a FUN movie. It's one of those that I can put in just about anytime, no matter my mood, and enjoy it. I give it a 4.

Pretty much agree with that, as it's good 80s cheese, done a bit better than the others of the time, but the goofy tone is somewhat of a problem in the later half when they're trying to rid themselves of the creatures, which should be portrayed as true threats, but I think it's pretty enjoyable.

I just watch Fright Night late last year,I actually found it to be a darker film that it first appeared to be,and I think as time goes by it will be revered as such.
What I don't understand is the approach of the upcoming remake. Now for me,the crux of the story is Peter Vincent and how his make believe world of late night horrors, that he has made a career out of suddenly turns out to be real. How the hell are they gonna remake that with a Vegas illusionist?

How the hell are they gonna remake that with a Vegas illusionist? So what? Tackle that when it comes out, but don't hold it against the film when you don't even know how it's going to play out. I can think of tons of examples that sound goofy in concept but turn out to be done rather well in execution. I don't really see much of a problem here.

Well, I agree that we might as well hang on and see about the quality of the remake, but the fact remains that this is simply not a film that I think was screaming out for a remake. The only reason to remake this that I can see is that post-Twilight teen vampires are a hot commodity. That does not strike me as a very good reason at all.

Personally, I think it's lame and stupid to call out how a film came into being. Care about the film itself, not what inspired it to be created. That's just stupid in my eyes. It's out there, deal with it on it's own terms not why it's there. That has nothing to do with a film's quality at all.

I'm willing to give the remake a chance. I actually really like some of casting......except for Colin Farrell as Dandridge, which seems like an odd choice to me for some reason. But we'll see.

I don't know, GL. I don't really care for remakes all that much for the most part. Although I haven't ruled out the possibility of enjoying thisone, I am not prepared to simply presume that another remake is gonna be particularly appealing to me. I think it is somewhat relevant that this film seems to have globbed on to the whole Twilight teen vampire trend, because some of the casting choices seem to indicate that they will be playing up the sexy vampire angle at the expense of scares.
As for the original, it gets a 4 from me based upon Roddy McDowell's fantastic performance, and the somewhat bizarre homoerotic tendencies of Chris Sarandon's vampire, which were pretty intense and right out there by 80's teen horror standards.
Anyway, I too plan on seeing the remake, but this was not a film that cried out to me for a remake. It seems like a little 80's tme capsule of a movie that is not likely to benefit from a modernization

Well, that may be true about the casting choices, but I seem to remember that those people were being cast in these films long before Twilight came out (see the film I just watched for proof of that) and since I have not seen one inch of those films beyond the commercial trailers on TV, I have no plan on ever doing so. Those aren't being marketed as horror films, this one still is as far as I know, so despite the fact it will probably have that crappy PG-13 rating, it's still a horror film so to me, that's all I need to know to watch it. It has nothing to do with how it came into being, I only care what it is, a horror film.

I can't say that I think the remake is trying to appeal to the exact same audience as the Twilight films or books, which are clearly paranormal romance targeted at teenage girls. As odd as I think the casting of Farrell is, it still seems a pretty far cry from Robert Pattinson as a skinny, sparkly vampire that broods dramatically as he watches a teenage girl sleep..... I'm sure he will have sex appeal, but so did Chris Sarandon. Hard to say and vampires are definitely "in" right now, but from everything I have heard, this is going in a different direction than what is popular with the Twilight crowd right now. I do agree that a remake is pretty unnecessary, but almost every decent horror film from the time period is getting a remake.

Precisely the point I was making, Jen: similar breeding grounds for conception but totally different in terms of execution. That's been my point all along.

It's on TV right now and I don't know why this rather obvious point has never occurred to me till now - Peter Vincent is named for Peter Cushing and Vincent Price.
