What are your plans for the Holidays this year? Favorite traditions? Favorite movies for this time of year? Thanksgiving is almost here and the rest isn't far off.

Right now, my focus is on Thanksgiving and not eating too much.

I'm gonna eat a ton. Heading to Columbus to celebrate it at my sisters this year.

Just got back a little while ago from the parents' house, spent the weekend there catching up so it was why I wasn't here the last couple days. Usually can't stand the majority of Thanksgiving food (and true confession time; I personally think it's a bullshit holiday anyway) so just had a light meal of the typically un-Thanksgiving style of chicken nuggets, rice and bread, which I prefer over the crap that's served on the day regardless. Spent the rest of the time setting up the house for the Christmas season by helping get the tree up, decorations around the house and the lights on the outside. Had a lot of fun doing so, especially with a Sunday just to relax as I came back home, but hoping everyone was as safe as possible and ready to enjoy the holiday season.

I am appalled that we don't have a "Joyous Kwanzaa" graphic on this thread. How thoughtless and insulting to the exactly zero people that I've ever met in my life that give a shit about Kwanzaa

My Thanksgiving was pretty good. I've also done some Christmas decorating over recent days and believe it or not I've already finished all my Xmas shopping so I've been wrapping some presents.

Well, two notes to report on here:
First, that I just sent in my orders for the family for Christmas. Gonna give online shopping a try (mostly because they handed me Amazon gift cards to use) so I got the stuff placed in and am awaiting when they'll ship.
Secondly, I'm getting really pissed off at how earlier and earlier the holiday specials are getting every year. I'm trying to develop a following for the new shows premiering in the year, yet I have to wait a week while they air the umpteenth re-run of the Peanuts Thanksgiving show, then I have to take another week off because of some lame-ass Christmas singing special when it's not even fucking December yet. Now, I've missed my shows for the second straight week as has everyone else who's following them, and because of the lay-off as well as the expected-increase to occur as it gets closer to the actual date, they'll get shafted again and then wonder why no one ever gets to follow these new shows when they start up. It's getting harder and harder to be a fan of shows on network TV nowadays and these lame specials are the root cause of it.

Easy there, tiger. I generally hate holiday themed specials too. Especially now that I've pretty much seen all of the good ones multiple times. Still, kids love that shit and I want them to have what they enjoy because I am not a complete Scrooge. As for it being the root cause of network TV shows struggling, I am not quite sure I can agree with that. I think that network TV is facing huge challenges from the cable networks that are freer to deal with more adult themes and explicit content (ie, you could never do Dexter or Game of Thrones adequately on network television) coupled with the fact that networks just seem generally less willing to allow a show time to find its audience rather than cancelling it if it isn't an immediate smash hit right out of the gate.

Yeah, network tv is pretty crap these days with just a few exceptions. AMC and HBO are where its at.

True, there is a solid point there in network TV not having as free a reign as cable does, even as stuff like 'CSI' and 'Two and a Half Men' begin pushing what you can and can't get away with nowadays. It still has to be broad in it's appeal whereas cable can limit themselves to one singular demographic (a channel exists for everything from toddlers to outdoor enthusiasts to the politically-minded and more) or can feature just about anything under the sun and not have to censor themselves or their content. There's an argument there. However, that's not all that it's about. Your last line, "networks just seem generally less willing to allow a show time to find its audience rather than cancelling it if it isn't an immediate smash hit right out of the gate," is where I'm getting at. How can it be a smash hit out of the gate if, over the course of a month, it's interrupted three out of those four chances because it has to get bumped for a Thanksgiving special, then a week later (while it's still November mind you) it gets bumped again for a Christmas show. Week three it has a chance to air an episode, which 90% of the time is a repeat since there's no point in continuing the season with just one episode, only to get bumped the next week because it's Christmas. Now, when the show comes back in January to finish the season, the ratings have gone done since no one trusts it to be on anymore or have forgotten about it in the time it's been away and then cancel it citing 'it's not developing a following' when it had one before the holidays. That's what I'm getting at.

Yes, you are right about the disruption in the broadcasting of shows ultimately having a negative effect on the ability to find an audience. Very good point, sir.

Yeah it's a fair point. They should just do the Xmas specials on demand or put them on the network websites so the kiddies can watch them whenever and not interrupt regular programming.

So, with my arrivals in the mail yesterday that I posted in the DVD thread, seems I've got my Christmas shopping done for the year and all that's needed is to wrap them and get them under the tree.
