I figured I would post one of the first reviews here I have done for my site. It is the third one actually. This is what the reviews look like at my site, so if you like it and want to see more then visit www.geocities.com/realcultfilm. I only have three reviews up right now because the site is brand new, but Iam going to be posting new reviews constantly.
Phantasm (Special Edition) By Lust del Carrion
Directed by: Don Coscarelli
Released by: MGM
Approximate Running Time: 88 minutes
Rating: R
Region Coding: NTSC Region 1
Mike Pearson (Michael Baldwin) has always found the cemetery to be a creepy place, but when he witnesses a body being taken away from a grave by an undertaker, he decides to investigate. Inside the cold and white-marbled walls of Morningside Mortuary he discovers a deadly flying sphere, cloaked mini-monsters, and the evil Tall Man (Angus Scrimm).
Phantasm is a classic horror film that everyone should see atleast once. Don Coscarelli blends this tale of horror with a touch of sci/fi to perfection. The whole film is filled with an atmosphere that is hard to duplicate. Angus Scrimm gives a fantastic peformance as the Tall Man and develops a classic horror villain in the vain of Frankenstein or Dracula.
The setting inside Morningside Mortuary is one of the best I have seen in any film. The cold and white-marbled walls help give everything an intense dream like feeling. It's almost like the characters are on a different planet when they enter the Morningside Mortuary. Then we have the Tall Man and his deadly sphere that flys through the halls looking for victims, which adds even more to the surrealism of everything.
Also, there is the subplot about abandonment and despair between Mike and his brother Jody, which helps fuel the dream/nightmare feeling throughout the film. Mike is constantly afraid of his brother leaving him alone. This adds another level of fear and dread besides the obvious fear for the Tall Man.
Phantasm is a classic and nothing less. It managed to rise above the horror films of its day and the horror films of today, with its dream like/science fiction elements. If you have not seen this film, then you should pick it up as soon as you can.
MGM has released a very nice Special Edition of Phantasm that belongs in every horror fan's collection. There is an interesting commentary by Don Coscarelli, Michael Baldwin, Reggie Bannister, and Bill Thornbury. It is not a great commentary, but definitely worth listening to. We are also treated to an almost 30 minute interview with Don Coscarelli and Angus Scrimm from 1979 on some television show. There is also some nice behind-the-scenes footage with commentary by Coscarelli. Definitely a worthy DVD package for Phantasm.
