Ugh, we're gonna go back to the name thing again? It's irrelevant, care about the music more. If you find that you don't like the bands in that style, then you don't like the music it's that simple. And I don't think Venom is what you would call 'True' Black Metal. They're a proto-band at best, as the riff-work is way too much Traditional Heavy Metal without that icy atmosphere and speed you find in the early Norwegian groups, and the vocals are all wrong, there's none of that demonic/possessed shrieking you find in the greats like Garm (Gorgoroth), Dead (the first Mayhem EP, 'Deathcrush'), Fenriz (DarkThrone) and Attila Csihar ('De Mysteriis dom Sathanas') which are more of what's found in actual Black Metal bands. Venom would still be there in the genre, but it's sorta like a Psycho/TCM situation: Psycho's the granddaddy of the genre, TCM started it off. Venom would be Psycho, Mayhem would be TCM. Mayhem wouldn't be around if it weren't for Venom, but Mayhem is were it starts and got all the characteristics down. The frosty, icy riffwork, tortured vocals, morbid lyrics, raw, garage-band style production, it's all there in Mayhem, and to a lesser extent other early practioners Bathory and Sarcofago, but Mayhem would be the starting point. I guess I don't really understand why Celtic Frost is never considered as one of the early practitioners along with Bathory? They have probably influenced the genre as much as any oer band I can think of

I've always thought of Celtic Frost being more of a Death Metal progeny myself, especially due to Obituary and Candlemass both taking a lot from them. They could be, but I've always lumped them in with the Death Metal scene, much like Necrophagia and Possessed were.

That is a fair point. I was probably giving them too much consideration as an influence on BM becasue they are scandanavian

They're actually from Switzerland, a little far from the traditional view of Scandinavia as Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Iceland but I do get what you're saying, that's the right time for the Black Metal bands to get started (I think the debut was '83 or '84, cause they formed right after Hellhammer split up and are actually the continuation of that band) and what with it being a strictly European style almost from the outset I don't doubt several bands took influence from them.

What Tupac album would you recommend for me? I mainly just know him from that movie he did with Janet Jackson called Poetic Justice.

I've never seen Poetic Justice but he was actually a really fantastic actor and was great in the movie Juice. All of his albums are great but he became a lot more polished as a writer and rapper as he progressed. If I had to recommend one it would probably be The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory. It's the one he was working on right before he was killed and it was released shortly after.

Iron Maiden - Killers: This was a pleasant reawakening on my part. It had been years since I bothered to listen to Maiden in the Paul DiAnno era. Dare I say it, as I get older I think I am prefering the less over the top DiAnno Maiden albums to the classic era Bruce Dickinson stuff. I mean, I still love my Powerslave and Number of the Beast, but I think I'd take Killers over Piece of Mind for sure
