Sonic Youth- Rather Ripped
The new Sonic Youth album jsut released this week. This is a very solid effort from one of the greatest bands of all time. A fascinating listen, but just a touch poppier than Sonic Youth's Sister and Daydream Nation heyday. The standard avante noise guitar work is kept to a slightly frustrating minimum on this one. While this is a tad frustrating given what Reynaldo and Moore are cpable of, it does pay off in some cases (most notably on the breathtakingly beautiful Do You Believe in Rapture). This i a very intriguing Sonic Youth record. At an age when most bands would be content to recycle ideas tht had worked in the past, Sonic Youth have embarked on a very different, yet utterly worthwhile new sound. Quite simply, this is not only on the short list for the best records of 2006, it may just be at the top.

Satyricon- Now, Diabolical (album)
A good album from a great Black Metal band. They are definitely taking a turn with their music and giving it more of a rock base, but are keeping the Black Metal in there with the dark lyrics. Their older albums like Dark Medievel Times are way better, but I still think this is a nice album. Some say Satyr is selling out with the newer stuff, but if he was I don't think he would have turned down a spot at Ozzfest. Definitely a pick up if your into the genre or the band.

Face the Pain Speed/Kill\Hate Acts of Insanity
Wow, a quite excellent thrash band from several members of Overkill. Faster than the main band, heavier too, and with just the right amount of catchiness in there as well. Not sure who's more aggresive, but looks like I'll have a hard time figureing out. Definitely a band to look into for 80s Thrash fans.
