The movie wasn't based on an existing comic book series, but it definitely used the comic book tableau. I think it actually may be the only movie that used the comic book format, that wasn't actually based any particular comic. Its a part of my Gnostic movie collection ad one of my favorite movies, along with most of the other movies directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Unlike many "comic book movies" its not a film that appeals to the all people, people either love t or hate it. Personally I think its one the best movie ever made, would be interested to hear from other fans. It does seem that we live in world full of films with "twist endings" It seems that every other movie made today has one, unfortunately M. Night tends to be thrown into the criticism of these kinds of movies. Night's movies are very different from the mass of uninspired twist ending movies that have been made outside of his films. "All my movies are spiritual and all have an emotional perspective." -recent interview This is what sets his movies apart from all the others.

I LOVE Unbreakable, its my favorite film by Shyamalan. I think the twist in this worked perfectly for what he was trying to do here. I definitely think its his best film. I do like The Sixth Sense and Signs as well though. After that, they have been pretty disappointing. The Village was well acted (and had a couple of outstanding individual scenes) but was very disappointing. It felt very contrived (and not the horror film it was marketed as). Lady in the Water was kind of bland and forgettable. And The Happening was hilariously bad, in my opinion. The lion scene kills me....LOL.

Signs was great, I went to see it in the theater 5 times, and I agree Lady in the Water wasn't all I hoped it was going to be, but still I give him props for at least trying to make unique movies and innovative, thought provoking storylines.

Saw this a long time ago as a rental when it first came out on DVD. I only thought it was alright. And the twist ending you guys are talking about: It was telgraphed from the very beginning. I knew Jackson was the villain from the first time he stepped on screen because he was dressed head to toe in black! Nobody else caught that?

With all honesty I did not know it was him until near the end, when watching a movie like that I tend to not think, but just watch the move and let it effect me as it plays out, and not think too far ahead of the action.
At the same time it was not the surprise ending but the revelation that I had learned something that was in line with my own opinions, and thats the thing about his twist endings is that their not just twist endings for the sake of a twist ending, they actually have meaning behind them, Which you certainly don't find in a movie like The Ring for instance.
Most twist endings have nothing to say beyond the director and writers need to show the audience how cleaver he can be by coming up with as many twists that he can.
In the end, as with most of his other films it was the deeper philosophical issues that it addressed which connected with me upon first viewing it, it is a movie that I can watch again and again and get something new out of it each time, Signs was very good for this, I'm still finding new things and coming up with new interpretations with each viewing.

Could you elaborate on the philosphical issues it addressed. I probably missed them, like I said I saw it once nearly a decade ago in my early teens.

It was alright but not amazing. I had a ot of fun with it. I am surprised by all of the criticism of th Happening, though. As far as I'm concerned, that was his best other than The Sixth Sense, obviously (which was the only really high quality film that he's made)

I saw it in school and I had a hard time paying attention to it. Never kept my interest, what I saw of it, not my kind of movie.

I am surprised by all of the criticism of th Happening, though. I thought it had potential and had some interesting ideas, but it was all more funny than anything (to be fair, I do think some of the humor was intentional. At least, I hope it was). I kept thinking I was supposed to be horrified or disturbed in some way. And Mark Wahlberg was just terribly miscast.

I don't even remember Wahlberg in it, who'd he play?

I don't even remember Wahlberg in it, who'd he play? No, he was in The Happening, Shyamalan's latest, he was the lead. And it was hilarious.

I actually like Wahlberg a lot as an actor, but he would seem kinda out of place in a Syhmalan movie, which I'm not too fond of. Believe it or not, I never saw The Sixth Sense. Heard the twist soon after it came out because everyone was talking about it and just skipped it because of that.

I like him okay, I thought he was good in The Departed, The Basketball Diaries and a couple of other roles. He just didn't fit this particular role very well at all in my opinion. The Sixth Sense is a solid film with a good cast (I really like Toni Collette). Even knowing the twist, its worth a watch.
