Moonspell is a Portuguese Black Metal band with death/doom metal elements, formed in 1989 as Morbid God. After renaming themselves Moonspell in 1992, they released their first EP Under the Moonspell in 1994, a year before of the release of their first album Wolfheart. The band quickly gained status and became one of the most recognizable metal bands from Portugal.
Moonspell reached the Portuguese top first with their album Sin/Pecado, and were, along with Metallica and Iron Maiden, the only metal band to reach the first place of the Portuguese charts.
* Fernando Ribeiro- vocals * Miguel Gaspar- drums * Ricardo Amorim- guitar * Pedro Paixão- keyboard/guitar * Aires Pereira- bass
Fernando talking about the release of their demo
"we composed one of the most ambitious and surprising records of 1994 on the underground scene: "Under the Moonspell" which combined our interests in southern culture, occultism and eroticism with a spawn of wide music influenced by our everlasting sources Bathory and Celtic Frost and by bands such as Dead can Dance and Arabian and Portuguese traditional music."
Daemonarch was a side project composed by all Moonspell members but drummer Mike Gaspar. The album was seen as a return to their black metal roots and its lyrics were all written by Fernando Ribeiro between the age of 14 and 16.
Moonspell are one of the few Black metal bands that I like

I really like their one song In and Above Men, but haven't heard much else from them. That one does stick out for me as it was when I first started getting into Black Metal, but again, haven't heard much else from them.

They recently re-recorded their demo Under the Moonspell ad renamed it Under Satanæ, you might like that, and their first album Wolfheart, don't think you'll like anything after that....maybe Memorial too.

I just have one question: is that stuff fast?

Some fast, some not so fast, some not fast, probably wont like the more experimental stuff in some of the songs, particularly the "demo" which uses eastern influences. If I was to guess Id say you probably wont like it, maybe you should check out Daemonarch, their side project, Unfortunately they only made one album, I only heard two songs from it so far, but it sounds more like something you might like.

Well, I'm a huge fan of Nile, Melechesh, Absu and Orphaned Land, so it doesn't really bother me to listen to outside influences coming into play with these kinds of bands. I'll look into them all, even though I don't really have a lot to invest in that at the moment.
