The whole idea is preposterous. First of all, I don't particularly like Aerosmith at all, but the fact remains that their fans see Tyler as the iconic face of that band and he can't be replaced. Can we say Ripper Owens anyone?
Not to mention, Billy Idol is a totally different sound. One I prefer, by the way, but not one that I see as jiving very well with it. Also, Idol's explanation of missing the audition because he "had a cold" might be the lamest thing I've ever heard. Aerosmith, like 'em or not, are one of the biggest bands in history at this point. If they called me up and offered me an audition, I would show up in whatever condition I was in and put on a fucking show. God knows, that is instant cash of an unprescedented level

Having grown up with them due to my parents, I can't say I outright hate the group but I've had my share of the band and I tolerate them now and will probably do so in the future, depending on my girlfriend/wife's tastes later in life. If this goes through, it will suck due to Billy having something called a voice unsuited to this style of music: can you see him, with his deep growl and inflection, especially at his age now, trying to hit those notes in 'Dream On' or 'Back in the Saddle Again?' A singer needs to have range to fulfill the frontman role here, and Billy doesn't have any. His music suites his voice because that's all he can do, and the simplistic nature of it reflects his lack of one. Him joining will be an epic fail.
Even more so since apparently Steven Tyler is now trying to sue them to get them to stop looking for a new lead singer. He's trying to get the papers filed and get it stopped. Therefore, this will probably be a non-issue in the months to come, and we'll be watching one of the biggest high-profile divorces in history this summer instead of a tour.

we'll be watching one of the biggest high-profile divorces in history this summer instead of a tour. That's what its looking like right now. I think the whole thing is pretty ridiculous. Honestly, if they can't work with Tyler anymore, or they don't have the patience to wait for him to work through all of the problems he is having now, they should retire the name and move on. Tyler is too big a part of Aerosmith and their success for them to think that it is in any way realistic for them to replace him at this point. And I am a Aerosmith fan....well, early Aerosmith anyway. I also agree that Idol wouldn't be a good fit.
