Different from the first film... but in a good way. It's pretty much like watching an opposite route the filmmakers may have considered going down while making The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
A good amount of bloodshed and death mixed with some black comedy makes this film a fun watch for pretty much anyone.
Not to mention the cheese.

Well put - the radio station scene for one is superb... and I'll watch anything with Dennis Hopper

I think that it goes down hill a bit once they are in the underground lair, because the power of the original is lost once the desturbing re-envisioning of the mundane gives way to an environment that is entirely alien to the viewer. That said, the aforementioned radio station scene, the opening decapitation on the bridge, and the chainsaw duel between leatherface and Hopper are all worth the price of admission

It was never intended to be like the original. Foone, there's gore in it that the original lacked (not detrimentally, but you could make a case that it's the least bloodiest of the series) the sequel has a fair amount of humor and it's all done with a real tongue-in-cheek attitude. It's fun and enjoyable, not dark and brutal. They're two different kinds of films and shouldn't be looked at in the same way.

Mildy entertaining but I was never really engaged by the plot or the humour. I did like Dennis Hopper's enormous hat though.

I always thought it was funny that the hat never did anything while he was underground. It stayed on his head, never moved and didn't get knocked off while he was running around, fighting off Leatherface and the Old Man, which is kinda fun at times when you notice it.

I used to read all the lurid articles and check out the pictures in mags like the Dark side and the short lived aussie publication Terror Zone but like so many other films it was unavailable to me - It was banned in australia, when i first got hold of a copy in '99 i actually found it to be a little disappointing,(i guess thats what years of anticipation can do to ya) but on subsequent viewings has really lived up to those early expectations i had.
Chop-Top is one of my fave characters in the genre these days, especially his very real back story and explanation as to why we did not see him in the original and the idea of Nubbins really freaks me out.
Hooper should really be commended for making a sequel that wasnt just a rehash ( a point that the subsequent directors reaaly should have heeded) and i for one would really love to see his original vision for the film one day

Isn't the Gruesome Edition the best version availiable, since it has those deleted scene as special features.

A 5 from me. The chainsaw duel alone would have earned this rating from me. haha

Indeed, far better sequel than is usually given credit for. To me, it earned that rating during the opening freeway chase, the rest of the film never really let it down.

Finally got around to seeing this for the first time tonight. I really liked it. Nothing like the original but they only would have fallen short in trying to replicate the first film's winning qualities.
This one was funny, gory, and had some nice performances (Moseley and Hopper). That's a recipe for a solid slasher sequel.
4/5
Qestion: Why were they living underground? Were they on the run after the girl from the first film escaped? The opening stated that the farm house was never located.

I guess so.Maybe in their travels with the rolling grill, they happened across the underground lair and liked it so much they set up camp there. I don't know. My question though - is Nubbins actually the corpse of the hitchhiker?

Yeah, that was my impression to, TWD. I thought it was him as well, hence why they're so special in their treatment with it.

Nubbins is actually the hitchhikers corpse. And Chop Top is his twin who was in 'Nam during TCM 1.
