Godzilla (titled GODZILLA in Japan) is a 1998 American science fiction film. It is a modern-day Hollywood remake of the Japanese classic film of the same name, though everything was altered. It was co-written and directed by Roland Emmerich, director of Independence Day and 2012. The film did not meet its anticipated success with critics, but it fared better worldwide, spawning an animated sequel called Godzilla: The Series. The film was released by TriStar Pictures.
OK, get out the tar and feathers............
I must say with all honestly that I "did not" hate Godzilla 1998, I actually like it quite a bit, if I didn't I would not have gotten it on DVD. The film was made way before the current trend of remakes, to me this is a "remake" in its truest form. Its not just taking a movie and redoing it over again, this film takes the source material and makes something completely different out of it. The idea for this Godzilla film being, what if Godzilla was just an animal, while at the same time keeping the idea that its existence was the result of nuclear testing.
This in fact one of the first films where it is stated explicitly that Godzilla is a result of such testing, in the US versions of Godzilla films this concept was glossed over.
Traces of the classic Godzilla can be seen in the creature in this film, particularly his body which does have some human-like characteristics, its a kind of blend between a computer generated creature and a man in a suit. (but still fully animated)
This film actually does fit into the Godzilla universe......in the Godzilla movies produced in Japan there are several references to this film, in the context of these films the creature is known as "Zilla" apparently Godzilla had been dead for a period of time and everyone thought that nothing like him would ever surface again. But then in 1998 a Godzilla-like creature attacked the United States, this incident was viewed as a "bad sign" so to speak, therefore proving that it was indeed possible that another Godzilla could appear.
In Godzilla: the final wars the creature from the 1998 film shows up and fights the real Godzilla. The creature was renamed Zilla for the film by producer Shogo Tomiyama because he felt the 1998 remake took the "God" out of Godzilla by portraying the monster like an animal that could be wounded by normal weaponry, when however the true Godzilla can't be killed by any of man's weapons (except the Oxygen Destroyer)
Heisei Godzilla suit actor Ken Satsuma walked out of the Japanese premiere of the 98 film early (after the helicopter chase sequence) saying "it's not Godzilla, it does not have the spirit."
This is a bit ironic considering all the changes that were made to Godzilla in the Heisei films.
Outside of Japan the creature is also known as GINO (Godzilla in name only)
5 our of 5 roars for this one (for what it was, it was a good movie, and I like how it was worked into the series as a whole)
