5 from me. One of my favourite films from childhood.
For a more supernatural but similarly evocative take on the era (and also with a great turn from Patrick Wymark who played Cromwell In Witchfinder General if I recall correctly) track down Blood on Satan's Claw.

Indeed, I'll throw some support behind Satan's Claw as well, GP. Pretty slow-going in the early parts but picks up considerably and becomes really good.

Agreed. I also dig Blood on Satan's Claw, although I do think that this film is significantly better.

Eh, that's a bit of an overstatement. Is it better? Yeah, but I wouldn't go significantly. Both have their flaws and their good points, so it's not like it's a whipping race between the two.
