Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster, released in Japan as Godzilla, Ebirah, Mothra: Big Duel in the South Seas (known internationally as Ebirah, Horror of the Deep), is a 1966 film directed by Jun Fukuda and written by Shinichi Sekizawa. The special effects were directed by Eiji Tsuburaya. It is the seventh film in the original Godzilla series.
As with the last review, this is the American cut of the film, but once again very little was edited out of the film. Yata is lost at sea, his brother Ryota "borrows" a boat and goes looking for him, along with Yata are his two friends and a guy who they think is the owner of the boat, this man turns out to be a bank robber who is hiding out in the boat. Yata's brother is on Infant Island and after Yato finds him they both go back to the island where the boat was beached. No one can leave the island because it is guarded by Ebirah, a giant "lobster"
I love all Godzilla movies, I even like King Kong vs Godzilla, mostly because the Godzilla suit is really cool, but I have to admit that this is one of the least entertaining Godzilla films, not that there is anything wrong with it per se, it has to do with Godzilla's opponent, which is basically a giant shrimp.
Ebirah is officially considered Godzilla's weakest and most uninteresting enemy.
The six hero's are fighting against a terrorist organization that has been working with "Heavy Water" the film does not however explain what exactly they are using it for. The hero's find Godzilla sleeping in a hillside cavern and use electricity to wake him up, apparently Godzilla can hibernate by making his heart slow down so that it almost stops completely.
As Ive been watching all the Godzilla films in order Ive come to realize that the continuity between the films is not that bad, most of the films can be linked together with relative ease, with perhaps the exception of the first film.
4 out of 5 roars for this one
