Godzilla vs. Mothra (Godzilla vs. the Thing USA) is a 1964 live-action special effects monster film directed by Ishirō Honda. It was the fourth film to be released in the Godzilla series, produced by Toho Company Ltd. It is the second film to feature Mothra.
Officially called Mothra vs Godzilla, is one of the least edited of the entire Godzilla franchise, only minor cuts were made in the Us version.
This film could be considered a sequel to Godzilla vs King Kong, even though Godzilla supposedly dies at the end of that film. Its not stated clearly but Godzilla supposedly washes up on shore after a massive storm, the same storm that brought Mothra's egg to Japan. The idea perhaps being that he was unconscious at the bottom of the sea after fighting Kong. This is pure speculation on my part however.
The story is simple, Mothra wants her egg back, she is dieing and so she is concerned for her baby, the baby which would carry on its legacy after she is dead. Mothra is the guardian of a small island called Infant Island (literal translation of the Japanese name), this sounds a bit weird and so I think its name of "Monster Island" in the US version is far better. A greedy corporation has bought the giant egg and refuses to release it. Two twins from the island, who are only about 4 inches tall, enlist the help of three reporters to help them.
Godzilla is still a bad guy in this film and so he and Mothra eventually fight one another, the suit used in the film is possibly the same Godzilla suit from the previous film, however an on stage accident caused Godzilla's teeth to come loose. At one point you can see his upper lip wobble, the director liked the way it looked and so it was left that way for the first few scenes.
Thankfully the childish humor that was so much a part of the previous film (US version, and to a lesser degree the Japanese version also) was toned down for this one, there are still a few funny scenes involving one of the reporters who is constantly eating eggs. In fact when he is sent to report on the phenomenon he can be seen in one shot frying an egg as he watches over the giant egg on the beach.
Mothra had its own franchise and was popular on its own, but then it was decided to put the two giant monsters together in a single film. Even though the film has two 4 inch tall characters in it, the film itself isn't as far fetched as its predecessor.
The Japanese were still sensitive about the bombing of their country at this time and so a scene of an American ship firing missile at Godzilla was deleted from the film, it remained however in certain US releases of the film.
4 out of 5 roars for this one
