After a series of strange incidents and deaths surrounding the locals around her, a mother struggles to believe that her innocent-appearing daughter is behind it all and tries to keep her secret from coming out despite the fact that she keeps on acting the way she does. What did everyone think of this one?

Eh, I think its mediocre. I don't mind it, but it really doesn't hold up all that well these days. I won't post any spoilers, but the ending final scene that just kind of negates the whole movie in an attempt to reduce the controversy of the whole thing is just lame. Not to mention, there is a real scientific discussion about nature vs. nurture as to what is the cause of violent behavior. this movie absolutely rejects any pretense of possibility that it could be how a child is raised that makes them evil. Just a slight annoyance from my perspective. If you are gonna go this route, the modern twist on this story, Orphan, is better acted and just generally more fun.
Anyway, I give it a three.

Wow, totally different ways to get to the same conclusion.
I agree on the not aging well part, as it's just too overlong and classy-feeling to really deliver any kind of real shock from it's supposed big-moment scenes, even more so since most of them take place off-screen and we learn later of the transgressions enacted, which is a big gripe on my end. As well, that discussion you mentioned was another big part of the film.
The main thing I disagree with is the ending. I absolutely loved it, thought it was a clever way to end it especially for the time period and felt pretty original. I also don't agree on the Orphan comparison. Orphan is absolutely wretched and completely worthless on every level, being one of four movies that ever pissed me off after having watching them. At least this one is about an evil kid, no matter how classy and sugar-coated it is.

huh? Surprised you liked the ending. Don't you think it just kind of negated the whole thing? Also, I am surprised by your reaction to Orphan. I thought that one was much smarter in its twist ending, and more disturbing as a result. The twist in Orphan was necessary. Otherwise, you wind up with G rated stuff like this.

How, the events still transpired as they were presented throughout the film, and the twist doesn't damage that at all. I think it was actually a pretty innovative way of dealing with the issue of how do you stop an underage child as the villain of a horror piece back during that era. Granted, it comes out of nowhere, I'll give you that, but I'm not terribly hung-up about it. The drawn-out pace and lack of on-screen deaths really gets me over that finale.
I'll explain more in the Orphan thread my thoughts on that one.

you are referring to the spanking scene, right? No, her being blown up on the dock by the lightning bolt when she tries to get the boat off it's moorings.

well, yeah. Of course that scene is all good. I was talking about the final scene in the film that I described above. It was required to be there so the film would comply with the Hayes code, and it obviously was entirely goofy, out of place, and negated everything that came before it.

Oooh, I get what you mean now, when they reveal the actor's faces in the doorway with the announcement of who played what instead of just listing them like a credit on a single page like they usually do. I don't consider that part of the proper movie because it's broken the fourth wall and directly shown that it's all done and over with. To me, the movie ends when it gets to the scene I mentioned in my spoiler, that last part I don't consider part of the movie, kinda like when they have a scene playing over the end credits nowadays.
