The Reds were pretty good that year. We had Greg Vaughn and he hit 45 home runs. This was pre-Griffey. I remember one of the last at bats of the game was 1st baseman Sean Casey and when he struck out (or maybe popped out) he broke his bat over his knee. That's how I felt as well. One of my best friends is a Mets fan because his dad is originally from NY and raised him to root for them. So I've been reminded of it plenty over the years... Interesting article from SI.com: Flurry of no-hitters and perfect games reflect changes in baseball

Yeah, Al Leiter's no-hitter, I believe...Oh, sorry for bringing up that bad memory. And indeed, congratulations to Matt Cain for his Perfect Game. Yeah, Congrats to Cain. But... That was certainly NOT a bad memory. It was a great memory. NOt a no-hitter, though. Just a run of the mill complete game shutout (which is still nothing to sneeze at) Oh, whoops. I could've sworn that was Leiter's no-hitter, the one-game play-off in '99. I know he threw one at some point, can't remember if it was for you guys or the Marlins. And speaking of no-hitters, HNT, what's going on with the Mets and that request to MLB? What's going on there?

CT, as for your article, I usually love Verducci (and I bet he'll be on MLB Network tonight before their big game the channel is hosting to defend/explain the article) but I think the biggest omission is something hardly anyone is mentioning: the change in batting practice to taking pitches/working the count. I think it's this absolutely inane, bullshit method of trying to get a starting pitcher to get his pitch count up, get out of the game and work over the bullpen to win. Why in the world are these supposed professionals, in a 2-2 count, letting fastballs down the middle of the plate go for called-strike strikeouts? I've seen that happen far too much lately, and it's been creeping into the game ever since they've placed importance on pitch-count and there's no reason for it to happen, yet the fact that it does is confounding. It's like they're purposefully getting two strikes on themselves, realize they have to protect the plate and are forced to swing at the next pitch, so guess what? Good morning, good afternoon, good night, you're down on three pitches, another out, and you've done nothing to help your team win. String a few of those together and you've got a no-hitter. It's the philosophy today that's causing this epidemic, not defensive alignment. You have to hit the ball first to hit it into a shift.

And speaking of no-hitters, HNT, what's going on with the Mets and that request to MLB? What's going on there? Yeah, it is a weird thing. I guess they are asking the ruling of a single to be overturned and changed to an error on right so that Dickey gets a no hitter. I think its an interesting request that will never be allowed anyway. Regardless of whether its an error or a hit, though, a runner reached base so it is not as impressive a no hitter even if you accept that it is one. No matter what, Dickey though a complete game shut out, which is all you can ask of a player and then some.

Hockey comes soon? The season just ended and it won't start again until November. Do you watch hockey somewhere else that I am not considering?
