For the first film, I always thought of him as an overly superstistious town drunk who just happened to be right. When it comes to the second film I think he knew something was out there and was going to go into warning mode again but Jason cut him off so to speak.

Great point Fire, he could have learned a lot more about the reality of Jason in between Part 1 & 2.

I'm not so sure he knew that Jason was actually alive. It's more like the murders at the first camp made his warnings about the 'Death-Curse' seem real, and now when the second camp opens up, he's trying to pass it along as well only to run into Jason who's now the living embodiment of the curse.

True, the events of 1 would be pretty compelling evidence that there's a curse.
