Sorry, guys. I just saw it last night. It was absolutely wonderful. I have no idea how it got an R rating with the amount of over the top spectacular gore that it had. Quite frankly, four theaters showing it or not, I am surprised the film I just watched wasn't banned outright for you guys like some of the classics have been. It is truly intense. It was genuinely shocking in parts. Jamie likes mainstream horror, but isn't a fan like I am. This was pretty much more than she could handle. She was literally gagging and almost vomited in the theater, and my entire arm is bruised and scratched today becuase she was grabbing it so hard. That is the sign of a great film.
I honestly give it a five, and I say it is hands down better than Army of Darkness and completely in the same league as the original two films. And, they ran the trailer for You're Next, which is finally going to be released theatrically in August and looks like a real firecracker in its own right.

As it's turned out, Sony have renigged and are playing it in Adelaide, so come May 13 I will be checking this out to kick off 2 nights of awesomeness (I hope). The 2nd night being a Tenacious D gig.

Glad you'll get the opportunity to see it. Like all great horror films, it probably benefits a lot from being seen in a theater with a good crowd ready to go along for the ride. I wonder what Sony's issue was in the first place. I mean, it is an intense film, but you guys made The Loved Ones. That should prove you can handle it, haha
I figured it was a problem with the classification board or something. If permitted, why wouldn't Sony want the film to show to as many audiences as possible?

I think the excuse being touted is a classification issue. It's been given an R 18+ which is the equivalent of your NC17. So they think it won't make enough if it's goes wide.

Can't wait to see this! I think they are showing it at our tiny local theater this weekend.

Have fun, Jen. I'm sure you and Seeker will enjoy it.
Matt, does that mean that nobody under the age of 18 will be admitted to the theater? I definitely can also see how that would present a huge problem for the film. The film, by any reasonable measure, was an NC-17 here too. Sam Raimi has way too much Hollywood muscle behind him for his 14 million dollar project not to ultimately get an R rating, though. The system is corrupt as hell, but this movie was great.

This movie was better than I expected, but the end was a biy drab.

I give this a 4. It was very well done, the gore was fantastic and there were a couple of scenes that even freaked me out a bit (someone mutilating themselves always gets to me). One of my favorite remakes. But I had some problems with the ending, that is the only reason it didn't get a 5 from me.

Frankly this one was one of the best remakes and an even better stand- alone effort. One of the film's best parts here is in how much action this packs into here, as there's a lot of scenes here featuring either the possessed charging after them or being attacked by them. The chilling opening, from the woodland abduction and chaining up in the basement before the actual manner of driving out the infected occurs makes for a fine intro to this one, as does the initial escape attempt from the house where the driving rain forces the car out into the pond and shows the demon rising and stalking afterward into the twisting, disorienting woods for another confrontations that's especially chilling. As well, the gradual build-up of her possession instead of the relapse following this encounter is not only genuinely frightening but build the action really well. Starting with the running water in the shower and the revelation of what happened to the others around her, this sets up a solid base here for one of the film's highlight sequences in their first encounter with the possessed as the attack with the shotgun, the vomiting ungodly amounts of viscera onto the friend before being locked in the basement and then battling the now-possessed and deformed friend in the bathroom gives this on an incredibly strong and chilling scene filled with some solid jumps and brutal action. Likewise, the attack here by the bitten friend is even more brutal from the action in the locked basement where she becomes possessed and forced to dismember herself from the counter and now begins chasing the ones left throughout the cabin in some really brutal, vicious battles really adds nicely to this one. Even more impressive here is the finale, which here is the film's best part with the initial cleansing attempt and subsequent revival, the encounter back in the house leading to the demons resurrection in the area where a thrilling, brutal and quite exciting sequence plays out here with the demon leading her throughout the leftover areas and into the woods into a thrilling, utterly bloodbath-soaked carnage that really lets the blood flow here quite nicely from the wounds but also raining blood on the entire sequence. Along with some truly outstanding demon-make-up that gives them a truly inhuman look and attitude that fits perfectly with their mangled features, these here are the film's positives against the few small flaws here. The film's biggest problem here is the fact that it resorts to such cliché and predictable manners of tormenting here for the possessed who resort to the old standby of demonic cursing to tease and torment the survivors here that the taunts aren't even creative enough to mean anything and don't even fit the tone of the movie at all being so lazy. This also could've done a little more here to set-up the contents of the cabin which just comes out of nowhere and doesn't feel all too logical. Beyond these, this one was an absolutely amazing entry.
