While growing up in a small rural village, Richard always protected his simple-minded little brother Anthony. When Richard leaves to join the army, Anthony is taken in by a vicious drug dealer and his gang. Anthony is relentlessly tormented and ridiculed. Seven years later, Richard returns with one thing on his mind- revenge.
Dead Man's Shoes is an amazing film. It is not your average revenge flick. The film dives into the idea of revenge, and the beast of it.
Paddy Considine's performance as the revenge-seeking brother Richard is aboslutely great. He creates such an unforgettable character, and you can feel the intensity of anger Considine fills his character with in the film. There is no doubt that his performance rivals the likes of De Niro in the Taxi Driver.
In the beginning, the film seems like your average revenge flick, but as it progresses the film takes an unexpected turn, and looks at the nature of revenge. Richard is caught between his desire for revenge, and his desire for redemption. It is a dark and gritty tale of human justice, but it is also a tale of morality in which nobody wins. The film is filled with emotions, and you cannot help but feel Richard's revenge is justified. He is doing no more and no less to these people, than what they did to his brother. Is his revenge as satisfying as it seems though? The film shows us how Richard becomes the the same kind of beast that his brother's tormentors were.
Shane Meadows did an incredible job directing, and writing this film. Everything is extremely realistic. You won't see drug lords with tons of money and assault rifles driving around in expensive cars. You will see petty drug dealers in a small town who make barely any money, and spend what they have left on drugs for themselves. The film is very dark and gritty. Even the violence is terrifyingly realistic.
While Dead Man's Shoes is a dark and depressing tale for the most part, Meadows makes sure to slip in a few comedic moments to lighten things up a bit. One scene that comes to mind, is when one of the drug dealers is trying to shoot Richard, but accidently shoots one of his partners. Admittingly dark comedy, but comedy none the less.
Magnolia has released a decent enough DVD package for Dead Man's Shoes, but it's a shame they couldn't have included more extras for such an amazing film. On the DVD you will be treated to a commentary with Shane Meadows, co-writer/star Paddy Considine, and producer Mark Herbert. You will also find an extremely interesting featurette on director Shane Meadows, titled In Shane's Shoes. The DVD also includes deleted scenes, and an alternate ending. Overall, this is definitely a purchase worth much more than what it costs.
