With the year finally over, I figured I would take some time to review what turned out to be a great year for myself and my fellow metal fans.
I tend to prefer a different brand of metal than the other fans around these parts, for instance GL prefers music played at break-neck speeds, I prefer the opposite - bathing myself in the somber enshrouding misery of the slowest doom I can find.
That said, if it's not too much trouble I would like to see some of the other metal fans post their top tens because I am curious to find what I missed in the other spectrums of metal.
My list (in no particular order):
Between the Buried and Me - Colors
Ulver - Shadows of the Sun
Pelican - City of Echoes
Neurosis - Given to the Risen
Electric Wizard - Witchcult Today
Symphony X - Paradise Lost
Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Black Planet (Not technically a metal album)
Pig Destroyer - Phantom Limb
Iced Earth - Framing Armageddon
November's Doom - The Novella Reservoir
2007 was not a very good year for any genre of Doom Metal, my personal favorite. In particular, Funeral Doom (my prefered sub-genre) had a horrid year - but 2008 seems to be shaping up very well indeed, with the forthcoming February release from what I will contend is the best Funeral Doom band, Esoteric.
Also, the new Aggalloch should be amazing as always, that is poised to hit shelves sometime in Q1 '08.

I'm not really a doom metal fan, and nor can I give a full tp 10, but a couple of the best for me this year have been:
Dropkick Murphy's The Meanest of Times The Deadwalk - Re-Animator Parkway Drive - Horizons

I thought the year on the whole was solid. Particularly the latter part, what with Electric Wizard dropping "Witchcult Today" - a true return to form from one of my favorite bands.
I would say this year was "solid" - nothing screamed out future classic, but also nothing screamed pathetic attempt either, at least in my chosen field.
Also, how was the Nile album? I was debating whether I should buy it or not, because I am not too sweet on traditional death metal.

Nile is one of my top three or four groups in the genre (Cannibal Corpse and Death take the top two, but sometimes I go CC, Death, Nile, Vader or CC, Death, Vader, Nile depending on mood) so I naturally loved Ithyphallic. Great sound, awesome songs, killer mood, and more than the usual Nile goodness when it comes to making listenable epics rather than wankfests on the guitar to prove their musicianship (I'm looking square at Morbid Angel for that one) and there's a lot more Egyptian stuff on this one compared to Annihilation, which supplimented it with more Gothic overtones in the lyrics. Strangely, Annihilation is the more fun one of the two but still, it's Nile, one of the best Death Metal bands to come on the scene in the last ten years.

I'll probably pick it up on my next weekly trip to the record shop. I mean, even if I don't like, it's only ten bucks. . . right? WRONG! I'll send you the fucking bill! Seriously though, I have gotten into Nile in the past, but they are hit or miss with me. I hope this one hits!

Not too much to tickle my taste buds released in 07. Here are the few that inspired me to shell out cash...
Ween - La Cucaracha Coheed and Cambria - Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume Two: No World for Tomorrow LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver

I've got Darkened Shrines, Annihilation and Ithyphallic and all have been really great and not at all qualifying for hit-or-miss status.

I have Black Seeds Of Vengeance and Annihilation of the Wicked. Black Seeds of Vengeance left me somewhat cold, while I really enjoyed Annihilation of the Wicked.

It will be necessary to expand this list beyond just metal for me to give a genuine top 10, but I will say that some truly excellent music was released this year and most of it flew under the radar:
Ministry - THe Last Sucker The New Pornographers - Challengers Art Brut - It's a Bit COmplicated Lupe Fiasco - The Cool Steve Earle - Washington Square Serenade Radiohead - In RAinbows Shellac - Excellent Italian Greyhound Damon & Naomi - Within These Walls LCD SOundsystem - SOund of Silver (45:33 ain't too shabby either but remains an aquired taste) Dizzee Rascall - MAths And English (why this wa not released here and remains an expensive as hell import is anybody's guess)
