Very favorable review for the French film Martyrs at BloodyDisgusting.comIf you don't want to read the whole thing, here's the last bit of the review..... It took an entire 24 hours for the movie to sink in and really left a dent in this reviewer's psyche. After it was all said and done MARTYRS is really quite an exquisite experience - it's so incredibly rare when a horror film is so engaging that it can feel as if you're right there with the protagonist. The only negative thing about Laugier's film is that once you see it, you'll never be able to see it for the first time ever again...

From HorrorMovies.caFeast 2 and More DVD Dates Posted By : Goon, Wednesday Jul,23 Filed Under : Horror on DVD,
Today there are just so many DVD releases that it really just comes down to the stuff that you will realistically be picking up or even show a little interest in. So without a doubt this list has to begin with Feast 2: Sloppy Seconds. So far what I have seen from the film looks laughable but because the original was so god damn good, I'm gonna give it a shot. We all will be able to check it out on DVD on October 7th.
On September 9th Uwe Boll's Seed will be hitting store shelves. For the first time ever really I have an interest in watching a film by Boll. I have heard this one crosses a lot of lines and is really a twisted little tale. Plus I'm a sucker for revenge flicks so this one might be right up my alley... but then again it IS Uwe Boll.
September 30th we will see The Devils Chair which has seemed to gather a lot of attention by other sites. I'm guessing that the director is media friendly which gives him a "cool" pass and more coverage.
Also coming on October 7th besides Feast 2 is Wicked Lake, Joy Ride 2: End of the Road and Stuart Gordons Stuck. Personally I've wanted to check out Wicked Lake for quite some time because I am a huge fan of Robin Syndey. But apparently according to the review we just got from Fantasia its not that great. You can also read our review for Stuck as well.
October 28th will see the release of Zombie Strippers which seems to be another film that is cool only in name. However I do see this film having some fans. I mean, Robert Englund, a pornstar and some zombies is always going to garner fans whether the movie is good or not.
Of course their is a whole slew of other titles coming our way in October and September and it will be a lot like last year when we had a shit load of DVD releases. So start saving now because we are gonna have a motherload coming Halloween time

From ShockTillYouDrop.comRepo! The Genetic Opera Hits DVD in January
ShockTillYouDrop.com learned today at Comic-Con that after its November run, Repo! The Genetic Opera will be available on DVD in January 2009.
Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, the horror/rock musical stars Alexa Vega, Paul Sorvino, Bill Moseley, Paris Hilton, Kevin Graham Ogilvie, Anthony Stewart Head and Sarah Brightman.
In the November 7 release, a worldwide epidemic encourages a biotech company to launch an organ-financing program similar in nature to a standard car loan. The repossession clause is a killer, however.
Also from ShockTillYouDrop.comInevitable: Rocky Horror Picture Remake
MTV is working with executive producer Lou Adler to remake The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the 1975 cult classic that still plays midnight shows in theaters. No cast has been named and no director has been set, however, MTV intends to use Jim Sharman and Richard O'Brien's original screenplay. New songs may be added by O'Brien. Adler hopes to have it on the air by Halloween 2009.

From Twitch (follow link to view trailer) The Full Trailer For Pascal Laugier’s Punishing French Horror Film MARTYRS Arrives Posted by Todd Brown at 8:35pm. Posted in Trailer Alerts , Horror, Continental Europe & Russia, Toronto Film Festival 2008.
Buzz film of the year? In the international horror crowd it certainly is, talk of Pascal Laugier’s Martyrs growing steadily since it first screened in the Cannes Market with the world at large taking notice once it was anounced to be part of the Toronto International Film Festival. We posted the first two official teasers some time back and now the full theatrical trailer has arrived and it’s not hard to see why people are talking. It’s not just that it’s bloody - which it is - or that the violence is directed against women - also true - but that it feels uncomfortably realistic. LAugier isn’t really glossing it up here, instead he’s dreaming up a horrific situation and playing it out with truly uncomfortable realism.
You’ll find the new trailer and the first two teasers in the Twitch Player below the break.

From ShocktillYouDrop.comBoard Midnight Meat Train for Cheap
Well, they're upholding their end of their contract. Various reports are coming in saying that Ryuhei Kitamura's Midnight Meat Train is hitting theaters this Friday, you'll just have to turn to your bargain theater to see it. Across the country, the Clive Barker adaptation is opening in venues where ticket prices are only one to two dollars! At the start of the week, Shock contacted a rep involved in the film to get an official theater count and potential listings - our query was not answered.
This maneuver is the latest in a line of unkind gestures towards the filmmakers of MMT. It began with rumblings of Lionsgate offering a limited release to fulfill its deal with production entity Lakeshore. Genre fans responded with petitions, catching the attention of Barker who endorsed a campaign for a wider bow. In the heat of this backlash, a little bird tells us Lionsgate's Joe Drake called for a meeting with Barker which "did not go well." And here we are, with a flaccid debut for an adaptation that was well-received in Montreal, at the Fantasia Film Festival, and at the San Diego Comic-Con.
If you have a chance to catch Midnight Meat Train near you...awesome. Otherwise, stay tuned for DVD release news sooner than later.

From ShockTillYouDrop.comSDCC '08: Catching Up with Alex Aja
Source: Ryan Rotten August 4, 2008
Three weeks out from the release of Mirrors, French helmer Alexandre Aja is confessing some concerns. "I don't feel like anyone is aware of the movie here," he tells ShockTillYouDrop.com. "We're opening the week of Tropic Thunder, I hope people will realize we're opening around that same time." Then, with a smile, "I want to see Tropic Thunder though."
Aja, making the press rounds at the San Diego Comic-Con, has stepped away from a horde of video cameras to small talk with us. Since I have already spoken to the director in-depth about Mirrors in the editing room I figure we can talk about other a variety of other topics, including Fox's handling of his second American horror feature.
"It's very strange, doing the marketing of our movie is so subjective," Aja says. "I tried to put in as much input, but it's their money so they'll spend it the way they want. I'm just disappointed they haven't shown the movie here [re: Comic-Con]. We finished it two weeks ago and I really wanted to come here and show it to everyone. I think in general, when they don't show a movie, people think it's bad. But that's not the case, we just finished the movie."
In fact, not only is the movie still wet, it most recently screened for critics in France. According to Aja, it received a warm reception. Surprising given the climate for horror in his home country. Since making his mark with High Tension, France has become a veritable spawning ground for hardcore genre fare in spite of the local reaction for that kind of entertainment. "I think I've seen almost everything," Aja responds when we ask if he's been keeping up to date on films like Inside and Frontiere(s). "I appreciate these films and I appreciate the fact they are trying, but I'm disappointed that the system is not changing in France. High Tension didn't change anything and almost none of the films that followed were a success. In Spain, you make a horror film and you get the prize, you get all of the critics behind you. In France, you can do whatever you want with a genre movie and it's put aside. I'm not sure it's going change. I'm convinced there's something cultural that's blocking the system. That's why all of filmmakers making genre films there are hoping they can get over here."
One film he's eager to see is Martyrs, Pascal Laugier's intense film which - Aja reveals to us - stars his cousin, actress Morjana Alaoui.
As for his 2009 3-D endeavor, Dimension Films' Piranha, Aja is heavy in prep with principal photography expected to begin this fall. If he has his way, he'll be shooting on location on Lake Havasu where the film's prehistoric piranha will wreak their havoc. Aja seems undaunted by the July 24, 2009 release date put upon him to have the film completed - even with the massive order of CGI underwater predators that will to be created. "I came up with the idea of doing it in 3-D and I want the film to open as fast as possible as the first 3-D movie." (Sorry, Alex, My Bloody Valentine will have beaten you to the punch.) "I think this movie is so huge. It's rated R and it's an action-adventure that's a perfect summer movie. The way I see the movie, the way I want to make the movie, I want it to be a big blockbuster."

HollywoodReporter.comDel Toro, Miramax not 'Afraid of the Dark' Remake will mark distributor's first horror outing By Gregg Goldstein
Guillermo del Toro and Miramax will produce a remake of the horror-thriller telefilm "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark," the specialty distributor's first big dive into genre filmmaking under president Daniel Battsek.
Comic book artist-writer Troy Nixey will make his feature directorial debut with the adaptation of ABC's 1973 cult classic. Del Toro is adapting Nigel McKeand's teleplay with Matthew Robbins, his writing partner on the 1997 horror film "Mimic" for Miramax's former genre label Dimension.
(Bob and Harvey Weinstein took the Dimension Films label and several genre projects with them when they left Walt Disney to form the Weinstein Co. in 2005)
"Dark" centers on a young girl, sent to live with her father and his new girlfriend, who discovers sinister creatures that live underneath the stairs.
Michael Falbo, Miramax's director of production and development, will oversee the project for the studio under president of production Keri Putnam.
The film is in its early stages; research and development of the monsters hasn't begun yet, and other producers might come aboard. Moviegoers can expect an upscale creature feature along the lines of del Toro's "Pan's Labyrinth," with an emphasis on distinctive characters in keeping with the Miramax slate.
Directed by John Newland, the original telefilm (known as "Nightmare" in Europe) gained a cult following through syndication and home video release.
Nixey wrote and directed the 2007 supernatural thriller short "Latchkey's Lament," a mix of CGI animation and live action. He has attained cult status for illustrating "Batman" and "Matrix" comics as well as writing and illustrating Dark Horse Comics' "Trout," which is in development at Phoenix Pictures.
"It has always been a dream of mine to work on a project with Guillermo, my favorite filmmaker," Nixey said. "I had no idea it would be on my first one out. Miramax's faith in me is everything a first-time director could ask for."
Nixey is one of several emerging filmmakers, including "Orphanage" helmer Juan Antonio Bayona, mentored by del Toro.
Peter McPartlin, vp business affairs and legal, negotiated the deal on behalf of Miramax. Endeavor and Gary Ungar at Exile Entertainment, who rep del Toro and Nixey, negotiated on behalf of the filmmakers. Robbins is repped by the Pitt Group.
